Bizarre comment. Clearly the teams he's with think he can't play that level anymore and has only been used sparingly by Anderlecht this season. There is much more money to be had in the English leagues than across the continent. Get rewarded well, play in front of full houses and far more people than at Anderlecht every week. With the chance to build a reputation in England, the home of football, and the gateway to the Premier League. And reputedly a man of great character - just the sort of leader we should be looking for at the next level.

Supposedly, he's on just over £60,000 a week at the moment. I can't see him taking a huge pay cut to join us. With the way modern football's going I wouldn't be surprised to see him at a lower level Premier League team like Leicester, Crystal Palace or Everton.

    Adams (hopefully) and Tommo?

It will be interesting to see what formation PW goes for in the SBC. 352? that would likely see NML in the "2" alongside Collo or Collo's replacement. Did NML's downturn in form coincide with playing up top rather than out wide? If so, will he improve up top in the SBC?

It would likely see Wilson/Ward as RWBs and Sibs/Elder at LWB. Would we need NML/CBT playing a winger role?

So many questions to be answered.

Before any transfer business has been done, id imagine he might do a 343 with CBT, Collins and NML the front 3.

I would agree with this. Not sure it’s worth it for the price it currently sits at.

Also can’t say I would be particularly glad to see the return of Conway, either. Still haven’t forgiven him for that ridiculous Rooney article!

I typically wait for one of their deals then cancel it before it goes up.

Thomas Delaney (Danish international midfielder) only has a year on his Sevilla contract left and they don't want him. He spent last season on loan at Anderlecht, with an option to buy for 3 million Euros, but reportedly the Spaniards are now ready to take 1.5 million: https://www.anderlecht-online.be/en/article/232104

He's 32 years old but could be the central midfield leader we need to make a difference. He's got American citizenship through his dad so I imagine would be comfortable in an English-speaking environment.

It's laughable that Cardiff want half a million pounds for Ebou, but for just over twice as much we could maybe buy someone like this.

I'd imagine his wages would be difficult to accommodate.

Having the biggest budget in the league is no means a guarantee of success. Look at ourselves at Championship level under Mel, or Man Utd in the PL.

    It does help though.

Anything other than promotion this season would have been a disappointment and arguably an underachievement.

Especially given that there was no Ipswich, Sunderland or Sheff Wed this time around.

The true test of Warne’s coaching ability will come next season.

I think the problem we have is that one of our biggest needs is in the centre forward department, which is probably one of the hardest positions to get good deals in.

  6. Chesterfield fans reckon he's going to join them on loan for next season. I'm not so sure as I recall Warne talking about a team 'at the top of the national league' who weren't convincing at all when they tried to take him on loan last year.

Then again it has been very amusing reading who they think their club are signing this summer with Sam Morsy (just gone up with Ipswich), Liam Cooper (Leeds captain) and Nathan Byrne the 'most' likely according to them.

  7. Also any chance that we could persuade some of the youngsters we let go to come back? Even if it’s on loan. Kellyman seems to be an exciting prospect and kaide Gordon has had glimpses. We would need a deal where we don’t have to pay if Gordon gets injured as he appears to be a bit injury prone at this point of his career.

I think you could well be right. When he came on at Pride Park this season they were chucking long balls at him and he's certainly a big presence for a young guy but I didn't see much from him on the deck

Looking at his stats he doesn’t appear to have much of an aerial presence either. He’s only won 43% of aerial duals, even Hourihane and Smith have a better record in the air.

  9. I think we need to be proactive with our recruitment. There are positions we can improve by bringing new faces in, but weaken by moving on from who we have to quickly and not replacing adequately.

Matt Ryan and Marek Rodak are probably the two best keepers avaialbe who would be realistic for Championship clubs, but I would expect both to want more than we'll be willing to pay, especially Rodak. Rodak spent 2 years on loan at Rotherham, so Warne could potentially sway him to come here.
A more realistic choice would be Walton, who had 23 clean sheets for Ipswich in 22/23 and 14 the year before. He also had 21 clean sheets in 80 Championship games for Wigan and Blackburn (plus 19 in 31 L1 games for Wigan)
I've always been impressed by Joel Pereira (Reading) on the rare occasions I've seen him. He only broke into Reading's side for the final 9 games of the season.

I like the first 3 names you mentioned, but I’m not overly convinced on how possible it would be.

Matt Ryan and Marek Rodak would probably be wanting a wage that is on the higher percentile for gks in the championship, whereas with Walton I’d understand if he wanted to be a number 2 gk in the premier league if Ipswich don’t mess up tomorrow. Otherwise I’d be happy with any of them if we can get them for a sensible wage.

What little I've seen this year he looks a tidy player with good set pieces but very lightweight. My Reading supporting mate suggested he wouldn't be sad to see him go, that was back when we were linked. I know he doesn't want to see their striker Kelvin (very long surname and I can't look it up right now) leave because he thinks he has big potential.

They're still hopeful of a sale to get a consortium in and that lunatic Yong out, but we know first-hand how long that stuff can take!

I’m not quite sure about Kelvin E. Doesn’t appear to be very clinical or anything really. On paper he looks a bit like one of those players that fans put back because he’s one of their own, but no one else is overly interested.

Micah Hamilton, Man City Winger, would be very good for us in transition but probably unrealistic

I don’t think it would be that unrealistic. From what’s I’ve seen he’s never had a sustained period of first team football. Man City may see it as an opportunity for him to get regular men’s football at a fairly good level. I doubt premier league teams will want to sign him and teams battling for promotion from the championship will likely be looking at players on their 2nd or 3rd loan.

The Portsmouth game gave us all a glimpse of what he's clearly capable of. Let's hope we see it more often next season with a full pre-season and settling in period under his belt. NML & CBT will give us some explosive threat on the counter-attack.

I hope that Portsmouth game gives us a glimpse of what to expect next season. This season I’ve found myself frustrated with the way we’ve played, but I could really see what the team was trying to do in that game. All being well it will be more effective next season with teams trying to beat us, as opposed to holding on.

  14. I hope we get a dedicated reporter again. It would probably be enough for me to subscribe again. It would be really good if Ryan Conway covered us again, as I was a big fan of his journalism. It was really good how he got involved with the club and I always tuned into his livestreams.

  15. These are some of my targets:

CB: J. Williams - 24 - Barnsley - E.O.C - Good defensive statistics, averaged marginally more tackles per game than Cashin (Derby's leader in this stat), marginally behind the first 3 cbs we have in interceptions and clearances, good age profile, improvement on Bradley in defensive stats apart from aerial ability, however he would only be 4th/5th choice cb

CB: R. Santos - 28 - Bolton - Transfer - This would be dependent on Bolton not going up, proven to be a really good defender in L1 and we could offer him the chance to take the next step in his career, defensive stats are similar to the likes are Cashin, Nelson and Forysth, wins more duels than any player we currently have, powerful, 68% pass accuracy is a better passing accuracy in the opposition half than are best cb this season (Cashin 58%)

LB: H. Burrows - 22 - Peterborough - E.O.C - averaged 2 tackles per game, 1 interception per game, 55% successful dribbles. Joint most big chances created in L1 this season with NML, These are all an improvement on what we had at LB/LWB and his crossing ability is on par with we we have. I'd see this as an improvement defensively and with his age we could potentially sell him on in the future.

CM: H. Kane - 25 - Barnsley - E.O.C. - Improvement of Hourihane defensively bettering him in tackles, interceptions, clearances etc, his passing ability is similar to Hourihane with Kane being better in the oppositions half, he's also younger and has time before he starts to decline physically, I presume he'd be more mobile than Hourihane is currently

CM: S. Carey - 23 - Blackpool - E.O.C. - Passing stats are very similar to Bird, majority of passes come in opponents half and they are pretty accurate (70%), more creative player than the likes of Bird, Hourihane, Adams, decent dribbling stats, lacking in goals and assists though

CM: E. Adams - 28 - Cardiff - Transfer - Sign him up. Simple as that really.

CM: P. Maghoma - 22 - Brentford - Loan - 12 g+a, excellent passing stats (83% with 77% in opponents half) which are an improvement on what we have, excellent dribbling stats, and wins more duels than he loses, good move for him to take the next step in his development after being in l1 with bolton this year

I'm not sure who we should go for as the type of striker we all would like would be out of our price range, but these are a few names who we could develop somewhat

    ST: W. Evans - 26 - Newport - Transfer - 21 goals last season with a 21% conversion rate

ST: I. Olaofe - 24 - Stockport - Transfer - 20 goals last season with a 29% conversion rate, conversion rate in previous seasons is just under 20%, which is a bit low

ST: M. Langstaff - 27 - Notts County - Transfer - 28 goals last season with a 16% conversion rate, scored 40 odd the season before, wouldn't be surprised if he did go for a quite a bit but you never know

ST: L. Shankland - 28 - Hearts - Transfer - 21, 24, 8, 8, 24, 24, 26 goals over the last 7 seasons, he's out on contract at the end of next season which may bring his value down, however he could be a bit pricy at best he may be £1.5 million (which is still out of our budget probably)

  16. Since Saturday I've been looking at some of the statistics from the players this year and some of CBT look quite impressive over the course of the season (including the first half before joining us. While he's shown the occasional glimpse of what he could do, I think it's fair to say he hasn't performed to the levels we (and probably himself) expected. This may well be down to joining while injured and taking time to settle in.

Anyway onto the statistics I was on about. I noticed that he actually did better than NML in a lot of statistics relating to attacking players. One of these being successful dribbles, where CBT averaged 60% of dribbles being successful. NML was marginally behind averaging 47% being successful. His accuracy of passing is what stood out to me 81% ending up with a teammate, which was the best out of all the players to have been involved with us in L1 this season. He was also second in the team with his passing accuracy in the opponents half, with 73% of passes being successful, being behind Nyambe. His crossing was also quite good with a third of crosses being won by teammates. This was only bettered by Barkhuizen, Fornah? and Korey Smith?.

While most of this potentially came from his time with Charlton, it at least gives an indication of what he could potentially do once he's had a full pre-season with us and hopefully settled in.

A think a few things to think about here.

    1. I’d take those estimates there with a pinch of salt. That estimate puts Blackburn players on less than £6k a week on average. (25 players) Not having it.

    2. Our wage bill has been widely reported but that figure, someone correct me if I’m wrong, is the entire clubs wage bill. Not just playing staff. There is no way our average players wage is £13.5k a week.

Didn't Stephen Pearce say the playing sides wage bill is around £7.5 million in his radio derby interview a couple of months ago.

I’m not sure about a business plan but there is definitely a list of criteria teams in the National League have to meet before they are allowed to join the EFL. The list includes floodlights, playing surface, ground capacity and presumably, security of tenure of the ground they play at. Ten years does sound a bit excessive but I would imagine Gateshead have known all along that this was a requirement.

I think there is, as in a recent interview with the chesterfield owner he spoke about how the EFL have been supporting the club in submitting their business plan for next season. Then again it did sound a bit more like a financial forecast, than a business plan that we’ve been under, when their owner was talking about it.

  19. I think we should be thinking about recruitment as an ‘evolution’, rather than a ‘rebuild’. If we do go up next year, I see us having a tough time maybe even being sucked into a relegation battle. I’d say we have more chance by adding a few players of higher quality than we already have in certain positions, instead of having a rebuild and having 8 or 9 new starters next season. The players seem to have gelled really well this season and apart from a number of players, who are no where near championship standard and potentially holding us back, I think we should look to improve out current squad.

I thought the 10 year ground rule was only applicable on joining the league.

Must be the case, as I’ve never heard of this particular rule before.

However, I do know that teams have to prove they can follow the rules of the league, which is why they have to apply to join when coming in from the national league. From the Price of football podcast I recall them talking about how teams have to provide business plans to join the league 2 after promotion when the national league to show they can meet ffp rules. Also, my local team Chesterfield have been talking about how they have had to upgrade their floodlights to meet the minimum standard the EFL sets out.

I just presume the application process, where Gateshead were rejected, was used to prevent teams not being ready to at the season.
