IIRC it was DCFC's auditors who came up with the idea of using a different amortisation policy than the standard straight line method, but I'm not sure even they owe anyone an apology for the EFL being obtuse.

Incorrect, it's the directors who decide the accounting policies ( which are clearly stated in the Financial Statements ), and it's the Auditors responsibilty to test these policies when forming their opinion as to whether the accounts show a "true and fair" view.

It would be entirely inappropriate to "come up" with a policy, and then audit it too, and would compromise their independence.

Fair comment on the first point, I genuinely don't remember the last time I had really even heard him in public.

I think even at the point in question we were not in much financial trouble which I could probably demonstrate if I went through the accounts.

As an accountant and auditor for 25 years myself, I also see myself very well qualified to comment on the amortisation matter and I'm completely baffled why anyone in the field would describe the policy as crooked, and the experts on the Independent Disciplinary Commission certainly didn't seem to take that view either.

Regarding the 3rd point, fair enough if you think an apology would go anywhere towards putting things right. I imagine if he did apologise you wouldn't accept it anyway given how you seem to view matters. Also perhaps he doesn't think he has anything to apologise for, after all it wasn't him that pulled the plug and stopped funding his business.

I'm also a qualified accountant, and I too find it baffling why anyone would describe the amortisation policy as "crooked" ?

Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of reporting standards ( ie, FRS102 & IFRS15 etc ) would know that the policy would be subject to independent audit, and would have been picked up if that was the case. And remember, the IDC found no fault with the policy itself as the initial charge was dismissed, the issue on appeal was disclosure and not the policy per se.

And in fact, the audit files were also subject to an additional review by the ICAEW too - which is about as thorough as you can get.

Maybe SP simply can't disclose private matters because he's an employee of the company and as such has a professional + moral + legal obligation not too, or maybe his simply doesn't want to talk about it ..... and maybe we ought to give him the benefit of the doubt as DC clearly has ( and by effectively saving the club he should have earned our trust as fans ).

We could pay fees this season, Warne chose not to so far.

Hmmm, not strictly speaking true – we’re in the second year of restrictions after exiting administration – granted it’s our business plan, but it still had to be approved by the EFL, hence the restriction.

PW, as he has stated, had a budget based on fees ( transfer & loan ) + wages, so it’s very much a case of balancing the books - so do you get someone in on a free + high wages, or pay a fee + lower wages ? Bear in mind, that we had deals in place for certain players that were scuppered through no fault of DCFC – think Klopp & Chansiri ??

Personally, I remember Stuart Webb turning up at the High Court with a brown paper bag full of fivers to stave off the threat of extinction – and David Clowes has done something similar, but with his own/families/companies money … and for that he deserves our respect & thanks.

For me, last year was about stabilizing the sinking ship, and this year is about consolidation – the academy was decimated, and long term planning was nigh on impossible ….. in football, I'm afraid there is no such thing as a quick fix.

Strong foundations, and Rome wasn’t built in a day, and all that malarkey - hence the 4 year objective.

  4. Just finished this, and it's a very interesting read - certainly puts a different perspective on life as a young footballer in the lower leagues.

Obviously focuses on his time at Newport, but speaks very fondly about the Rams - definitely worth checking out.

Last week, I bought a case of St Austell Black Square Imperial Stout (I always buy a case each year - it varies from very good to excellent, and I always keep a couple of bottles back for posterity). I opened one of this year's last night - it is simply astounding. So good, I ordered another case today.

Based on your recommendation last year, I ordered myself a case this year - and cracked open the first one to get me through the final 20 minutes of the Fulham game. I can honestly sat it's the most "stouty" stout I have ever had ... glorious stuff indeed !

    Cheers
