  1. I will agree on that as well.

If you can optimise software to a specific device of course it will run better on lower hardware, Apple get to keep costs down whilst increasing profit margins. Winner winner.

I have the 8 now, have to say the camera is insanely good, no idea what they did but it's much sharper and the colours pop better this year.

Will get the dog out and take a few snaps to upload

Anybody else finding themselves locked out of the forum lately ? 3 times in the last few weeks I've had to wait 14 minutes then try again then I get in no bother.

Not complaining or anything, just genuinely interested to see if this is happening to anyone else. :)

    * Also, anyone noticed the forum running slow tonight ? (26/09/17 @ 17:35)

Is this with the same security warnings that we've spoke about before or it simply not accepting your login details?

As for slowness, I did notice it running quite slow this afternoon, might have been between 2/3pm. These things unfortunately just happen. I know they are moving a bunch of servers to a new location, no idea if that is causing blips elsewhere. Not a lot I can do anymore as it's a managed server, I don't have any on/off button to reboot things.

  3. If you try it do it quick because they will likely stop signing iOS 10 next week or the week after and you won't be able to downgrade.

My advice usually to stay in the safe zone is if your phone arrives with iOS 1, upgrade to iOS 2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 etc. but don't go to 3.x.

My missus upgraded her iPhone 6 to iOS 11 and whilst it worked, didn't have all the features was a bit slow at times. Has that awful gold iPhone 8 now.

Interesting to see that one plus five on the list. I've read plenty of reviews, but never actually seen one, or heard of anybody using it.

I'll be needing to change soon. Still very undecided on what to get.

Whilst impressive those numbers are, again in the real world they mean very little, not something you would notice sending an email or browsing a forum. If you're into editing videos and exporting them on your phone that's when you will start to notice it.

It's just a funny thing as one criticism of Apple is that you can get a much better spec hardware for less, be it a PC or Phone and thats true, where Apple comes into it's own is the optimised software for it's own devices, they don't need the extra specs in the hardware to out perform those that do.

The whole thing is actually quite boring, and I'm the one that instigates it! ?

Is there any particular reason why you went for the 8 rather than the plus?

After 2 years of plus size phones just fancied a change, something I could use in one hand rather than 2. Take a hit on the smaller battery but then it doesn't have a large screen to power. Away from stats on a sales sheet do you notice an hour less battery in the real world? My house is littered with wireless pads now, just place it on for a quick boost.

I’d it true that the new screen on the Apple is in fact made by Samsung?

Samsung makes parts for iPhones yeah, couldn't tell you which, Apple also have patents which they licence to Samsung. All one happy family.

  7. “Feels like a toy” is what I said, that’s because I’ve gone from 2 years using a plus model and back to the original size iPhone now. Used to having something larger in my hand.

The only differences between the X and 8 is the camera which adds new features you will barely use and the full OLED screen.

The 8 has the same chip and Ram so won’t feel any different to use. The 8 plus has an extra gb ram and larger battery.

It does feel better in the hand, not as slippy, the extra weight makes it better balanced to use. I’ll get used to the size difference.

Missus picked up the gold, if you’re a man don’t do it, very very feminine looking, the trim is gold but the back is a sandy/pink almost foundation like.

Space grey is black, not sure why they have to be fancy with the name. Maybe it looks lighter in some light conditions but it’s black.

Not much else to say, it’s a super quick, great looking phone. Most powerful on the market Geekbench tests have shown.

The 8 plus with 3 gbs of ram has given better performance results than the Note 8 with 6gb of ram. Just shows you more hardware doesn’t paper over the software cracks.

Buy it. Unless you want the X for the full screen.

£129.97 from currys! They can buy that one themselves.

    The 3 bulb starter kit?

Bulbs are like £50 usually each for the colour ones. Cheaper if you get just white bulbs, you can still dim them and everything, just no colour options.

  9. 2 minutes ago, Moist One said:

Are the bulbs just as simple as plug into the ceiling fixture?

    Yeah, straight swap.

You have to leave the light switch on to control them with the app, so avoid using them in rooms which have extractor fans that come with the light.

Can you get those light bulbs without having to have some sort of hub as wel? I looked into them but thought you needed the nest thermostat or something similar to use them. I really wanted to get some for my parents. Or did I get the wrong end of the stick?

Philips Hue needs the hub, you can get starter packs with it bundled in. Ethernet cable into the router and Bobs ya uncle

You tried holding the full stop down?

It's great that iPhone comes out of the box how you like it but if you want to change It, what can you do?

These chains are great, they feel really comfortable.

You can install 3rd party keyboards still, Gboard, swiftkey are both available but there is really no need.

Errm, I could have told you it wasn't an iPhone before you ordered it.

I had to switch to a phone contract so I could get released without charge to join EE. No point in ordering another iPhone 7 to send straight back, may as well see what all the hype over on the other side is about and it's not all that......predictably.

Could of saved time by saying......

    The bad

    1) It isn't a iPhone

    True!

I'll be keeping the iPhone 8.

Wait for the EE SIM, send this bad boy back. Found more I like, more I hate but can't be arsed, like you say, it's not an iPhone.

Will say this though, much better than the S7 edge.

  14. Holding the settings key allow you to remap it to a comma.

Showing a 3rd party app highlights a major issue in that an iPhone out the box works, no need to go through different keyboards and all that.

what about sound quality (music playback) and ease of camera use? what about ease of data transfer? these are the things that matter @David I came from a Sony Xperia Z3 compact back to iPhone 7, and the Sony actually wins on all of those, and music and photos are important to me.

Haven't tried music or camera yet, data transfer it has imported contacts and photos from iCloud.

Photos are not in order, complete mess, didn't import notes which was an option

  16. Morning with Android as an Apple "Fanboy"

    Things I like.

    1) The phone, it feels and looks amazing, almost too solid and well built if that is a thing. When I go back and hold the iPhone it feels awful but I knew this would happen.

    2) The unsecure facial recognition. Super quick even if a photo can unlock the phone.

    3) The default browser is much improved, better than Chrome. Little touches like the goto the top of the page icon that pops up really helps when you can no longer click on the clock to go to the top. Not all great though, see the bad.

    4) Screenshots, just a little cool thing is when opening the photo, you can select go to url where the screenshot was taken.

    5) Samsung Connect syncs with my TV and it's super quick, you can even mirror the screen and sound back to the phone. Would never use it mind you.

    6) Swipe down/up for apps. I do like Androids home screen implementation, where all other apps can be hidden.

    The bad

    1) Slooow, for a flagship phone why so slow? Apps, browser page loads, all feels a little clunky. Scrolling through twitter, profile pictures start popping up 2/3 seconds later as you scroll past. All heart icons on this forum are lit up pink, yet another browser to apply more tweaks for.

    2) The keyboard, horrendous, this maybe as I've used Apples for years now and been using the large 7+.

    3) No reachability, ok you can press the home key 3 times, lowers the full screen but Apple's dropping of the screen is so much easier.

    4) No Philips Hue in Samsung's connect app. They are like the most popular light bulb but no, you have to buy another Samsung hub for it to work. Nah.

    5) Sooooo many apps, Google's version, Samsung's version, Microsoft. Bixby on one button, Google Assistant the other.

    6) Sooooo many settings, literally took me over an hour to go through everything and still think I've not covered everything.

Have put my SIM card in. Will use it for 48hrs. Unlikely I'll stay. As great as the phone is, yet again Samsung's layer of turd on top of Android makes it a phone that will frustrate and end up being launched across the room.
