New Under 21 Premier League

Hi,

Just seen that the premier league have launched a new under 21 league featuring 23 teams, 17 from the premier league and 6 from the championship. Unfortunately Derby aren't in the league due to us not having a category one academy im guessing as all the teams participating have category one status.

Can anyone tell me why we are not a category 1 academy as we are now producing good players and more talent than some clubs with category one status.

Is they're any specific differences and benefits/drawbacks to having category one status?

I believe it's just the money invested into the academy. There are not really any benefits from

being tier 1 over tier 2, you cannot poach players or anything like that, a tier 2 club can come and take a tier 1 player, and vice versa.

Derby are now tying players down on contracts as young as 14, to stop other clubs coming to take players, and that's why they are also giving players like Bennett and Highes run outs in the first team, so that if you are good enough, you are old enough, and you may get played at 16/17, where at teams such as Man City you may not get a gme with them until you are 20/21. To try and convince players that you can go to the big clubs, but the chances of you staying with that club and getting in the first team are not as high if you stayed with us.

I can't see much benefit from it to be honest, just because your a Cat 1 academy doesn't mean your players will be better, its about coaching and integration with the first team, not who's spent the most money.

Category 1 - Elite - is like an Ofsted report, combining several criteria including, facilities, age groups, coaching staff, etc.

The reason DCFC will not get Cat 1 is the investment, £2.3 million minimum is required for the Elite status, DCFC currently invest approx. £1 million per year, so therefore will be Category 2.

This is why the Premier League forced the 'Sky payment' agreement on the football league last November, having Elite academy status enables them to poach young players from non Elite acadamies for peanuts. For example 16 & 17 year old players can be bought for a maximum of £300, 000, rather than a 'proper' transfer fee i.e Oxade-Chamberlain for example.

As stated earlier Bennett & Hughes will be classed under the previous rules, but anyone under 16 coming through the acadamy now will be affected by the new rules.

Spot on there.

Its deliberately targeted at pricing out the majority of clubs so the "big boys" can pick top youngsters up on the cheap. £2.3 million a year is a lot of money for any team outside the prem to put into an academy. You have to have 18 full time coaches as well.

When the fair play rules eventually come into force for the prem clubs this will be a sweetener for them as they won;t have to pay big fees for the next generation of Walcott's and Oxlade-Chamberlain's.

We have our own it seems.

Now we really will see how our youth development lines up against the rest of the teams in the Championship.

Club enters U21 Professional Development League 2 – North, under new EPPP rules.

Derby County will compete in the newly-formed Under-21 League this season, under the new Elite Player Performance Plan which has been introduced throughout the Premier League and Football League this summer.

The EPPP is an ambitious long-term vision with the aim of giving English football the ability to create the best Academy system in the world, allowing clubs to produce more and better quality home grown players.

It has been developed after consultations with Academy Managers, Premier League clubs, the Football League, the Football Association, and other key stakeholders within the game.

The creation of the new Under 21 League has been brought into play to bridge the gap between clubs' academies and their first team.

Derby have applied for Category 2 status in the EPPP, so as a result the Under-21 Team will compete in the Under 21 Professional Development League 2 – North, while Derby’s Under-18 side will play in the Under 18 Professional Development League 2 – North.

The emphasis will be on playing Under 21 players, with each team limited to three overage outfield players and one overage goalkeeper.

Following the decision to introduce the Under 21 League, Derby have made the decision to withdraw from the Reserve League.

Manager Nigel Clough commented: “We’ve had a great few years in the Reserve League, winning it twice, but our resources cannot stretch to fielding a First Team, Reserve Team, Under 21 Team and an Under 18 team at this moment – especially with games falling so close to each other.”

The Rams are still in discussions with a number of clubs regarding when their fixtures will be played, so please note that the Under 21 Fixture List which has been published today is subject to change. Home games will be played at Moor Farm Training Ground, while two matches are required to be played at Pride Park Stadium.
