Enjoy it now Italy, because, like us, you've got diddly chance of getting past the Germans.

Well thats BS to be fair, unless this is the first international tournament you've seen you would know that games vary, excellent teams can have bad games and poor teams can have amazing games. I seem to remember world cup 2006 in the last 16 italy v australia, terrible game all the way through no goals then right at the last minute some italian dived in the box and won a penalty to put italy through, no one gave them a donkeys chance after that but they did pretty well, even beating the highly rated germans 2-0.

Moral of the story, every game is different and never write anyone off

You are massively over-rating the Italians, player for player we should match them and that's why I cant except 'well at least we tried' attitude, should of been so much better and after the first half we was pathetic!

The whole squad bar three play in italy, and we've heard how bad prior to the euros how bad the italian leagues are but obviously not.

We should, but we dont. You only have to look at our midfield to know that going forward and on the ball we couldnt even match the Ukranians. De Rossi and Pirlo are so much better than Gerrard and Parker it's embarassing.

But, as i've said, it's not the actual players ability in itself. It's the mentality and way they're told to play that will means England will never progress. The best sides in the world playing passing, possession football in some way or another. I think Swansea this year showed that you dont have to have top, top footballers to play a possession game. But if you train and focus on doing so with the manager installing the correct mentality it can be done.

I disagree.

I know Italy will be looking to carry on their winning ways but in my opinion I don't think they've been near Germany in this tournament and I can't see them getting past them. Last night, the German camp must have been wringing their hands with glee at the performance put forward from both teams (but Italy did play better than us, particulaly the 2nd half).

I think it's going to be a German/Spanish final with the Germans winning it.

The saddest news for me is that Roy Hodgson wants Gerrard to carry on as captain.

Its obvious something drastic must happen but the people at the top can't leave the oldies behind.

This is the squad for U19s Euros next month:

Goalkeepers: [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/J/Samuel-Johnstone]Sam Johnstone (Manchester United), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/R/connor-ripley]Connor Ripley (Middlesbrough).

Defenders: [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/D/eric-dier]Eric Dier (Sporting Lisbon), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/G/Luke-Garbutt]Luke Garbutt (Everton), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/K/michael-keane]Michael Keane (Manchester United), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/R/Jack-Robinson]Jack Robinson (Liverpool), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/T/Tom-Thorpe]Tom Thorpe (Manchester United).

Midfielders: [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/C/Conor-Coady]Conor Coady (Liverpool), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/B/Ross-Barkley]Ross Barkley (Everton), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/C/Nathaniel-Chalobah]Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/K/Harry-Kane]Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/L/John%20Lundstram]John Lundstram (Everton), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/R/Nathan-Redmond]Nathan Redmond (Birmingham City), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/T/George-Thorne]George Thorne (West Bromwich Albion).

Forwards: [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/A/Benik-Afobe]Benik Afobe (Arsenal), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/B/Saido-Berahino]Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/H/Robert-Hall]Robert Hall (West Ham United), [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/H/Hallam-Hope]Hallam Hope (Everton).

None of them are getting a real chance at club level. I believe we should send as many of our hopeful youngsters out on a 1 or 2 year loan in Europe to broaden their horizons to different styles of football (what are they actually doing at their clubs?)

Or the FA can drastically change things so that the majority of a starting line up MUST be English.

Something just has to be done, otherwise i fear we won't win anything in my lifetime. A real shame at 20 years old.

I was pretty shocked at that performance I have to say. No idea why Hodgson decided to play the entire tournament with 10 men. How Young never got subbed is beyond me. Quarters was a good achievement based on how limited the team is, no real undue criticisms barring Young and Rooney.

I agree totally with this, the issue of course relates to a point I made earlier. We could get a decent England team out of the young players we've got (Wilshere, Cleverley, Walker, Richards, Welbeck, Rodwell etc) if, say, they trained as a team every fortnight, learning to bond and work together, practising passing and possession, working as a team unit and installing the correct mentality. But can you see Fergie and co letting their players do this? Course not, the Premier League teams are far too selfish to allow this. Fergie won't even allow Hernandez to play in the Olympics for Mexico, because 'he needs a rest', forgetting the obvious point that it's his job as a professional footballer (I'm probably just bitter because I've got tickets to see Mexico v Gabon, and was looking for reasons to enjoy the game 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/angry' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />).

You massively underate them, or massively overrate the English players... You're judging the players by the standard of the league and that's wrong.. The PLs standard isn't as good as what people think but the top teams we do have consist of very little English players.. As a percentage top teams in Italy (bar Inter Milan) field Italian players and their better players are Italian, it's the complete opposite to England.

I'd like to know player for player how you come to that conclusion.. Abate is better than Cole going forward, much better.. Englands defence is solid, but so is the Italians.. They've conceded less than England at this tournament playing against better teams.. Just look at the midfields.. England have Milner (Man Citys 6th best midfielder?) Gerrard (always outshone by better midfielders like Lucas, Alonso, Macherano etc), Parker (Spurs 5th best midfielder? not a patch on Modric) and Young (Uniteds 4th best attacking player behind Valencia, Nani and Giggs)..

Now compare that to Pirlo (one of Europes best and in a midfield that went the entire year unbeaten), Di Rossi (Romas best midfielder and genuine with worldclass ball control and passing range), Marchisio (another Juventus diamond who has incredible movement, ball ability, passing) and last but not least my favourite Montolivo (who was so good at Fiorentina that AC Milan have bought him - his technique is just incredible.. When you have 4 midfielders of this quality, all with better technique, ballcontrol, passing ability, movement is it any wonder where the game was won? The midfield is so important and Englands midfield is poor..

You can not rate Englands team on any perception of the PL and those of other Leagues.. Seriously, look at it closely and you realise that midfielders from teams who aren't even in the top 4 (Cabaye - Newcastle, Arteta (prior to Arsenal), Felleini - Everton, Dempsey - Fulham) would all get into this England team.. Our midfield is so bad and overrated it's scary.. Their jobs (Gerrard, Milner, Parker, Young) for their respective clubs is to be the headless chicken and run around and support their better midfielders

Without being biased Mexico has one of the best U23s in the world.. (The U17, U20 and U23 are all world champions).. You lucky git, watch out for Marco Fabian (he'll play as a false number 9) he has an incredible future.. As do the majority of them..

I agree with Bris actually. With the team we had, we did ok in the end. The game is about scoring goals and we played a much better team than us, yet in the game, we dragged them down to our level. It took penalties to stop us.

I also don't get England fans. Everyone went in with low expectations, apparently, yet there's still shock that we went out in the quarter-finals to Italy.

I'm happy with our tournament. We won the group and could have beaten Italy on penalties. Good stuff really considering we don't have any world class players in our team. "What about Gerrard and Rooney?" - well, Gerard is very good at Premier League football and Rooney is good for United but until they orchestrate a decent team performance for England, they don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Pirlo. And I'm not overrating Pirlo - I'm being realistic about our players.

It's annoying though because I think we could make up a pretty decent side out of players that don't necessarily stand out in the Premier League. No more Gerard of Lampard for me. Parker can stay as an example of what hard work and simple passing should look like. Richards in, Zamora in (when he played for England, he played out of his skin - what a beautiful insult to Rooney etc that would be if he was picked ahead of them), and I'd build the team around the Cleverleys, Rodwells, and Wilsheres. Defoe should start. Crouch is like Caroll but with a decent pair of feet so he should be in. John Terry is also a n0b.

Martin Kelly and Stewart Downing wouldn't get anywhere near the England set-up.

Injuries haven't helped but we could be just as effective by playing different players and looks a lot better as we go about our business.

Well I flew back, landed at 5 and went straight to work so I'm rait tired. Only saw one Derby flag anorl.

We've performed at about our level, I'm not too disappointed and I think given the circumstances, particularly how little time Hodgson had to prepare, and the number of injuries we've done ok. We did well to take them to penalties.

Time now for Terry, Lampard, possibly Gerrard and Cole to step aside. Not because I've got any problem with them but there are now bright young players who need meaningful match experience at international level to get them ready for Brazil. I'm hopeful for 2014 but only if players get exposure to the national set up now.

As an aside, England fans were exceptional yesterday. Really well behaved, well mannered and were mingling with the locals and chatting away to the Italian supporters. Couldn't be further away from Charleroi and Marseilles.
