Day
Nobody gives you 1st place, you have to earn it, England did that and we were the best in Group D and that's a fact (see the table for proof) Nobody looks back on history and looks at possession stats, chances on target, off target. It's about results and the table, history will show..... England 1 - 1 France England 3 - 2 Sweden England 1 - 0 Ukraine Sweden 2 - 0 France Mwhahaha ( France had 31 attempts on goal and couldn't score against a team we put 3 past lol, this won't be found in the history books I'm afraid)
Day
History will also show the trophies Spain has won, unfortunately it won't say how boring they are to watch. I was even tempted to flick over and watch the cricket when Spain played and I hate Cricket.
ramsbottom
We played them in Italia 90 are you really under 23 The amount of moaning Bris does there's no way he's under the age of 60 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> It's probably dementia that made him forget we beat them in the 3rd place play off... I can see where he's coming from with regards to being realistic about our chances but this being a knockout tournament it's all about the result. There's no points awarded for artistic merit it's the simple matter of scoring more than the opposition. We may be playing like a R2-D2 side but remember Wembley & West Brom??? Except for maybe 10 minutes in the second half when we scored we were outplayed for the whole game but did we care come the final whistle??? Did we f**k!!! I can't see us winning it and anything after this is a bonus but it won't stop me supporting the boys and hoping with a bit of luck we could pull it off COME ON ENGLAND!!! ladyram
Well I want to know why Rooney thinks his hair looks good? 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> Mind you, he could have the best barnet in history but nothing - and I mean nothing - will ever make that face look any better. Mary Hindge
I dount we'd beat France should we face them again.. We wont play France again Spain will knock them out, but if by some crazy fluke and Engerland do play France in final we will just have to hope we play as well as the mighty Sweden to beat them............. Engerland have invited teams onto them, most teams we have played had plenty of shots but 95% of them are from a mile out, if this was Derby I would be concerned and not happy with the way we are playing, but this is England and this is tournament football. COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!

smiffy
Isn't it the first time we have beaten the host country, or does it not count being a co-host. I think Bris has piles, or something, he has completely dis-missed Greece against Germany, even before they have kicked a ball., wonder what excuse he will trundle out IF Greece turn them over, it will undoubtedly be technical. SillyBilly
Don't think anyone is underestimating Italy, just that Spain (on their day) are on another level. I'd put Italy on about a par with France. Apologies but my Young vendetta is becoming a fever after last night. He isn't doing enough and the team won't be able to carry him when we play better opposition. The stat that popped up on 25 minutes, England 0 attempts Ukraine 7 (albeit speculative efforts mostly) needs to be taken seriously. I waited the entire first half for England to "start" and just nothing!
Alph
I'm guilty of keep going on about Young but the rest of the team have carried him this far. Diving and standing still are his top attributes.

Any of those players will stand where you tell them and hussle the opposition but we need to be more positive when we have it. They both look low on confidence and nervy in possession. Even though he should've squared it for Walcott on the break I'd go with Ox Chamberlain as he at least likes running at players when he's got the ball and finding space to receive it when he hasn't, Young's movement last night was shocking... smiffy
Casillas throws the ball out to Pique then 10 mins and 400 passes later Fabrigas taps in from three yards. Big Joe punts the ball 20 yards inside the opponents half, controlled by Gerrard who sweeps it wide right to Walcott on the run, to the bye-line, crosses, and big Andy nearly breaks the net with a thumping header, 10 seconds from start to finish, I know which goal I 'd prefer to watch. Alph
I love watching Spain. It's an art. Complete control! But there's no reason for England or Chelsea etc to play like that. To try to do something they aren't capable of would probably cost results

I'm not the only one to find Spain boring to watch at times then. Its like watching a never ending tennis rally at times and you just want them to hit the winner and put you out of your misery. I'd do the same. But for once, I think an England manager may know what he is actually doing Re. Milner. I'm convinced my small brain must be missing something and Milner is actually providing a function. Young, on the other hand, I fail to see any contribution... blackNwhites
Just my tuppence wo'th. We never seemed to get out of the blocks, quite a frustrating game in that I thought we'd get more chances but obviously we didn't. Although we had the better ones again. That Ukraine 'goal' was offside anyway, don't know if people covered that in this thread but a lot of drama was created after the game on ITV. The only drama is how bad was that linesman? 2 offsides before that ball crossed the line, 3 errors in quick succesion. I'm going to say somehting nice about James Milner. He worked his socks off last night to the point he was absolutely frustrated. He's not a great wide man and mostly acts as cover in the defensive positions, apart from the running around he doesn't offer a lot else. But seeing as he came off the pitch ready to drop, well ran Milner, well ran. Ashley Young, just hasn't got going has he. He's been found out on the big stage this season, didn't perform in the champions league and isn't performing in Ukraine. When Walcott comes on and Oxlade not far behind, we suddenly seem dangerous. I think the philosophy of Roy is get a goal, stretch the play a bit and then bring on the pace and stretch it further as the opposition look for a goal. smiffy
As for Spain, they are so tippy tappy oriented I swear blind one of these times a player will have an open goal, and instead of scoring he will pass back to the halfway line to start again.
