DERBY County striker Luke Varney could be sold before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The Rams confirmed late last week that a number of clubs had shown an interest in taking the 27-year-old on loan.

Derby now say there is also interest in a possible permanent move for the player.

"There is still interest in Luke for a loan but there is also the possibility of a permanent deal," said manager Nigel Clough.

"That interest could be stepped up this week.

"If a move gets close, we might not involve Luke against Coventry City on Saturday, so as not to take any risks with him."

Varney joined Derby on loan from Charlton Athletic in November 2008 and a £1m-plus move became permanent in January 2009, just a few days before Clough took charge following Paul Jewell's decision to quit as manager.

But Varney has made only 11 starts for the club

He spent virtually all of last season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday and made a rare appearance for Derby in last Saturday's home defeat by Cardiff City.

It was his first start for the Rams in 15 months and the first time he had featured in a year.

Rob Hulse and Chris Porter were not fit to start against Cardiff and Varney was called on.

He set up Derby's equaliser scored by Tomasz Cywka but his future still appears to lie away from Pride Park.

Varney's contract runs until 2012 and Bristol City are one of the clubs showing an interest in him.

Clough said Derby are still chasing a new face or two before the transfer deadline.

"We have got nearly two weeks, so there is still plenty of time and I think, historically, things happen in the final week or last few days of the transfer window," added Clough.

"We are doing what everybody is doing – making calls and lining players up, that sort of scenario.

"We keep asking and keep waiting.

"There are one or two things in the offing at the moment, both ins and outs, so we will see what happens."

got an e-mail that works for dhl earlier on today-

Luke Varney came in earlier, spoke to him for about 10 mins.

He's been dropped again got told to have the weekend off despite training all week.

He said Hulse & Porter aren't fit to start tomorrow both on bench, Cywka is out as you know, Doyle's not even been considered as the lone striker.

It's either gonna be Commons or get this, Dean Moxey up front.

Went on about he's definitely looking to move if a left back's been asked ahead of him.

Said QPR came in with a loan deal willing to pay 50% of his wages but it got rejected.

Bristol City are considering signing him for a fee.

Seemed a sound guy, said it was a shame as he said his performance against Cardiff was one of his best and he thought that he was getting back into the side.

Be surprised if that's true to be honest, was reading this earlier....

---------------------------------------------------------------

Conor Doyle is in the frame to make his first start for Derby in the televised clash with rivals Coventry at the Ricoh Arena (12.15pm).

The 18-year-old American forward signed a two-year deal with the Rams earlier this month and made brief substitute appearances in the games against Crewe and Cardiff.

Tomasz Cywka fractured his cheekbone in the defeat to Cardiff last weekend and is expected to miss out, which means Doyle could get the nod.

"Conor could start," said manager Nigel Clough, who is waiting on the fitness of strikers Rob Hulse and Chris Porter.

"(Coach) Johnny Metgod said the other day that the only reason we are not picking Conor is because of his lack of experience but he is never going to get it unless we pick him."

Hulse and Porter have yet to train with the rest of the squad this week. A sore Achilles ruled Hulse out against Cardiff while Porter (hip) was only fit enough for the bench.

Well Clough has said:

"If a move gets close, we might not involve Luke against Coventry City on Saturday, so as not to take any risks with him."

And

"Conor could start," said manager Nigel Clough, who is waiting on the fitness of strikers Rob Hulse and Chris Porter.

And we all know what Dan's sources are like....Alfonso Alves ahem ahem.
