My son got the Google thing (everyone at his work got one, a present from the boss), so I've just (5 minutes ago) been given his Alexa. I'll have a play with it when I get home at the weekend.

Is Alexa the name of his girlfriend?

I stand up and push the button on the wall for free.

Can your light switch also give you the latest weather report, news headlines, time it is in Brazil, who Bognor Regis are playing next, what the traffic is like on the M6, how you spell Apple, who the current King of Congo is, how to make a Yorkshire pudding, convert pounds to kilos, calculate 6474763 x 838747 or tell you when it's Donald Trumps birthday all without lifting a finger?

There's a lot of misinformation out there about how to make a Yorkshire pudding. I've done the research and perfected the process. I don't believe google gadget or Alexa could properly help anyone with that.

I'll give you news and weather, but I've got a TV so I'll find a way without Alexa. The others are just examples of how to Google something. Which I can do without Alexa.

Solution waiting for a problem.

If you can find the TV remote and nobody is watching something.

What was the problem smartphones became the solution to? Did they struggle in the 80's not being able to access social media on the bus?

I'm not saying it won't take off - but it's not got the killer use that it needs to justify the cost, yet. I remember my brother in law saying the internet will never take off. But soon after, porn was designed to fit on a screen you can put in your pocket, and everyone wanted one.

The cost is only £35, thats how much the Google Mini and Echo Dots are now, yeah the bigger ones and Apples offering will be more expensive but for less than a night out to have so much information without having to mess around with your phone/computer is pretty awesome.

Sure all smart phones now have voice assistants but you need to be near to your phone, these things work at a greater distance

The killer use is that they’re all a great digital radio / music player. If all you ever did was keepnif in your kitchen and play music while you cooked, it’s a bit pricey, but not that pricey.

Like the killer application if a phone was that it is a phone, first and foremost. But over time they’ve become smarter. Now you’re saying you can google all the stuff I can ask Alexa, so why do I need Alexa? Well the only reason you can google it so easily is because someone had the foresight that a phone could be more than a phone. And a music player / digital radio can be more than just that.

Maybe tge personal assistant is a bit of a gimmick for now, but it won’t be long before they become ad integral with our lives as our phones.

I remember when iPads came out and I thought ‘why would anyone just want a bigger version of a phone tgatvxanf make calls, what a pointless invention).

This us just a screenless version of a phone really. But it’s the future.

Apple haven’t hinted at any cheaper versions like the dot or mini have they?

is this because anyone with a HomePod is likely to have the equivalent of a dot (ie an iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad) somewhere upon their person anyway?

The dots are just a way of accessing Alexa, but if you already have Siri on your phone, do you really need a ‘dot’ in every room?

they just have to make Siri better, and the microphones on phones better.

The advantage of the small ones is the speaker on it is louder and better quality than a phone, also need to unlock the phone to use it. I know you can set it to unlock the phone when you say ok Google or Siri or whatever but you would be setting it off all the time you use the speaker

The Home Mini can be a nightmare in that respect, the TV can trigger it off, the adverts they ran over Christmas I was getting weather reports read out as it's listening for any voice.

Siri on the iPhone is tuned into one voice, both myself and the missus have them and me saying Hey Siri won't trigger her phone and vice verser. Can also be used without touching the phone, you need to be nearish though for it to hear you and you hear it.

Yes the TV set mine off once or twice, same for the Google one only your voice will open it but say it's in your pocket and you say ok Google to the Google home phone unlocks and registers and so goes the Google home
