I am a bit busy work wise but when I get an hour or three I want to do a simple 2 team all time record study ...over say the post war period or the last 100 years arriving at

1) Derby County's  whipping boy = most victories against

2) Derby County's nemesis = most losses against

Sunderland? Crikey! How can that be? I've seen us beat them 6-0 at the BBG and 2-1 away at Joker Park and yet they're our bogey team.

They really are the Navan R Johnson of football too.

We last beat them on 3 Feb 2001 with a Craig Burley winner.

For the last away win you have to go back to 1990 - Saunders and Harford in a 2-1 win.

Since 1991, our overall record v them is

P27   W4   D8   L15

Not disputing the facts me owd. Living nearby I'm aware that it's been a while. I've been to most the blummin games:(

the 'crikey' is aimed at how such a currently tawdry team as Sunderland (aka Man U reserves / relegation drama queens, 2005-present) are one of our stickiest bogies. Their ground must be sculptured from an enormous bogie.

Although I presume some teams view us as equally dismal and sticky.

But not as sticky as Toxteth O'Grady's (USA) world beater.

maybe we should exclude the horrid prem season from the stats as it distorts the results.  We didn't just lose to bogey sides that season we lost to everyone.

perhaps I should get hold of the memory wipe stick from MIB and eliminate everything to do with that season

A brilliant piece of work Admira ! I had forgotten that the more you play someone means both wins and losses can ramp up. Middle borough being the obvious example

the one that sticks out at first glance in the loins per game is that Reading one. Bolton being a team with a big history pre and post war you might expect it .. But Reading !

Our record v Reading:

P41  W11  D8 L22, pretty bad

Also interesting that we've only played Bournemouth ten times so five seasons out of our long history.

Teams on Merseyside clearly our biggest problem but of the 16 teams we have the lowest points per game against, 10 of them are current Championship teams.

Full list of points per game: (Championship teams in bold)

In our history (against the 91 teams):

@admira ... With apologies for auto spell ( how points per game became loins per game is an interesting curiosity ! )

is the points per game adjusted to the 3 for a win ? To allow for that change in rules ?

A fascinating excercise all round. I was kind of hoping there would be some mainstream side that we nearly always beat across time but it doesn't appear to be the case. The cheerful point is that in our history we win more than we lose and if we add in the draws then statistically speaking we have a good chance of points.

is there an error in the played / won drawn / lost - They don't seem to add up ?

Yes, adjusted for 3 points a game. The 6,937 was points. Games played should have been 4,988.

4,988 games played plus Wigan =  4989 ... 11 games to go for DCFC 's 5000th fixture which looks like being away Newcastle in February .. A black and white festival.

Nice thought but I only included games against the current 92 in my stats.  Our actual overall league record is:

P 5,322

W 2,104

D 1,248

L 1,970
