9 years today

Didn't want to take over the depression thread but just to let you know it's now 9 years today since my last bet....

The hardest thing for me is to give myself a pat on the back and some praise. But I need to more often. Thanks for all your kind words over the years posting on this forum. It means a lot even though I can't show you in person.... It lifts me when I help people understand and also hope to help others through addiction.

Thanks Andy

Congrats man!

Achievement, I doubt I'll ever look back with a similar life milestone (not a positive milestone, anyway) regarding my issues - I don't gamble, myself (unless the lottery counts).

Be proud. Not just for what you've done for yourself, but for those little ones you're always talking about on twitter :p

Thank you, it's either them or the usual hyperbole I usually tweet :D

It doesn't matter what your particular demons are, to have beaten them for such a long time is very impressive and I take my hat off to you.

well done Mafia, did you lose much to Gambling ? I was reading earlier about David Gest and his addiction, these terminals should be better regulated in my opinion.

There is a big debate about FOBS being the crack cocaine of the gambling world....

If you're addicted the way I am you'll probably bet on two spiders climbing the wall....

I'm not sure what the solution is without banning or seriously restricting betting.

What could the government do to restrict it? Just have one account only? Only be able to bet a set % of your earnings each month?

Not sure how anything other than education or a ban will change things.

It is an incredibly brave thing to share something like that Bob. People who have never been addicted never really understand no matter how much sympathy they offer. Keeping those demons at bay is a triumph to be proud of. It got you, but you stood up and beat it. Well done

Didn't they try to put a limit on the numbers of machines within one shop? I think the limit is 4, but I could be wrong. Those machines are what makes money in individual shops. I do a weekly accumulator and even when I'm in there for 5 minutes a week you see people just throwing money into those machines, some can't even bare to watch as the roulette wheel spins.

The problem is that some bookies have been accused of opening other shops purely for an extra 4 machines, that's how lucrative it is.

To me, that is just limiting profits, not individual losses.

They also have caps you can individually set on the machines. But then, if there's 4 machines in each shop, then another 4 down the road... then another 4 further down the road... if you want to bet it's going to be hard not to.

What would make it easier for us addicts.... Is that you don't have to go through the ritual of self excluding from bookmakers every 6 months/1 year/18 months depending on which bookmaker you use, they're all different with their policies. I've never done it but there's plenty of us out there who rely on this as a barrier.. And having to do it every so while is very hard especially if you've just admitted your problem. If there is some sort of ruling from government that all bookies made sure it was a complete ban/self exclusion for life then it would be easier for some of us. The stories I here from people trying to self exclude, especially from poorly trained staff who don't understand etc.

End of day it's the gamblers who have to stop, fully admit that. But do you know bookies/casinos/arcades have a responsiblilty too if some one self excludes... It is an offence to take a bet from someone self excluded I believe.

As for online gambling... Gamblock is the main one to block all sites. £20 I think, would be best £20 you'll ever spend if you had a problem.

I can't put it any better than this, so I'll just copy it.

Well done and I really hope it stays that way for you fella.
