FIFA 16: EA Sports game to feature women for first time

International women's teams will feature in football video game Fifa 2016 for the first time in its history.

England captain Steph Houghton and her team-mates have been included with 11 other women's sides for play in one of several game modes.

Until now only men's teams have featured on the popular EA Sports game which was first released in 1993.

"To be one of the first female players included is something we'll always be able to look back on," said Houghton.

"Hopefully it will help raise the profile of the women's game even further," added the 27-year-old Manchester City defender.

Houghton will lead her country to the summer World Cup, beginning on 6 June in Canada, with England to meet Colombia, France and Mexico in their group.

But will Fifa-16 designers give the England players the skills in a virtual reality setting that they showcase in real life? Will Houghton be rated as a good technically on a computer game as she hopes?

"Quite a few of us in the team play Fifa so I'm sure there will be a bit of banter about our ratings. I'm looking forward to scoring as myself for the first time," she added.

Fifa 16 designers used American striker Abby Wambach - the top international goalscorer of all time with 170, according to her national team's website - to record the typical movements of a female footballer and players have been head scanned in order to create a lifelike look ahead of the September release.

The England players were scanned at St George's Park in February.

Eniola Aluko told BBC Sport: "I think it shows where the [women's] game's going in terms of how fans can engage with us in a game. It's really cool although it's a bit weird to do all pictures and facial expressions but it will be nice to see how it will all turn out.

"My little brother will be very excited to play me on Fifa. He'll find it fascinating. I'm excited to see his reaction."

"Bringing some of the best women's players and teams in the world to our franchise is a massive event for EA Sports," said David Rutter, vice president and general manager of EA Sports.

Pointless really as it will still be a Barca v Real borefest online, be a pro will change tho, instead of having 2 ft dwarfs with purple afros there will be ponytails all over the place

Have they mapped out the movements so the boobs wobble realistically?

Are all the goalkeepers realistically rated at zero?

Can you do men's teams vs women's, where the men aren't allowed to tackle, and have to let the girls score 1, otherwise they might cry?

(It's okay, my wife doesn't read this?)

I'm all for women playing the game but they need to face facts and accept the quality of their game is atrocious and I'd prefer to have more coverage of better quality leagues in the Conference and Conference North/South in the game.

I sometimes watch women's football on TV and wonder if they feel ridiculous playing in 30/40/50k seater stadiums that have about 100 spectators.

But you can't say that it shouldn't take up TV space, cos that's sexist...

Surely the nature of being competitive sports athletes is that the best get the best spots. So considering there are literally hundreds of mens teams that aren't featured in the game better than the women's teams, why is this happening?

Do you think when creating a pro we get to set how big their tits are? That'd make things interesting

That's Sepp-speak

Interesting points, The ladies game standard is attrocious? how many games have you watched?

The premier league is supposed to be the best in the world - I think its attrocious. You have a few top teams that have a chance  of wining it. Matches are boring generally and thats with the supposed best players the workd can offer.

Not looking forward to promotion with Derby then?

"I'm not renewing my season ticket if we go up, the clubs a joke if it thinks I'm going to watch Premier League football" :p

He is right though. I'm all for women football teams but they are awful in comparison to men(don't bite me feminists). The Sweden under 16s boys team beat the USA main women's national team 7-1 I believe without breaking a sweat.

Don't forget that the pool of players interested in women's football will be much smaller than men's. Also there will be a lot more attention to the men's game from early ages upwards. Women's football is very far behind the men's in terms of progress, interest, funding and everything. So in all honesty something like FIFA 16 helps to bring that attention, which will only improve the game.

that said, it is sausage.

why compare them to mens teams? They don't play them. Its luke comparing premiership teams to non-league teams.

the women's game has to be judged on entertainment merit initially. If they produce close matches, which the spectators enjoy then they are providing the spectators with something they want.

Obviously improving standards will attract more attention but for women the game is still developing. More exposure, more money, more coaching equals better standard and the cycle of development grows

to be honest the first season up would be mainly - "wonder if we can sneak a draw" not a great way to spend Saturdays. But of course I want it to happen.
