Where would we be now with Nigel still in charge?

Recommended Posts

The list above represents a loss of just under 3 million, lets look at some other signings,

Martin free

Fozzy free

Grant free

Buxton free

It's easy to cherry pick facts, we could all do it to support our viewpoints, my view is he did well, but wouldn't have taken us to the next level like Mac has, sad he was sacked, but pleased with where we are now.

Not many managers have the luxury of 5 years, 10 transfer windows and 50+ signings to try and pick up some decent talent. You would think even the worse managers would eventually get some of their lucky dips right.

Of the players that do remain from cloughs tenure most have required a significant amount of coaching to bring them up to the standard of a promotion chasing side...something which the previous manager was clearly not capable of.

Hence why I said I'm pleased with where we are now, don't think it's as easy as better coaching, maybe just better suited, more positive tactics?

I'd guess that's the difference between a manager with previous non-league experience, and a ex international manager who's won titles abroad, and took a smaller club than us to a UEFA cup final.

Not a Nigel fan btw, just looking for balance.

I didn't like many of his tactics to be honest, nor what seemed to be a lack of ambition at times, though I agree he brought some good players in on frees as well as some poor ones, but didn't get the best out of them.

Sammon was preferred to Martin in the main strikers role for one, with the latter playing much deeper, which now would look laughable. But much happier with the more positive outlook and skills the current coaching staff bring, plus don't think there was much depth to the immediate staff Nigel brought with him. But lets move on!

The conclusion is even the Clough lovers can't bring themselves to defend that list of signings!

Oh, utter garbage and bullshit.

Every single one of Clough's poor, or should we say 'less successful' signings, is more than compensated for tenfold by the fact that he signed Buxton, Forsyth, Keogh, Ward, Russell, Grant and (Chris) Martin.

We wouldn't have signed Thorne that's for sure.

I'd hazard a guess that Stevie May would have been our big summer signing.

Interestingly, I read the Sheff Wednesday forum the the time that he signed and their fans were going so over the top - 20 goal a season striker, the one to take us to the playoffs, best signing in years etc. - it was very reminscent of us signing Johnny Russell.

I can't help feel the Owls are now where we were three or four years ago, treating every 20 goal a season striker from Scotland as the new saviour and best signing in years...

Stevie May incidentally has scored a whopping three goals this season, with one of those being a rubbish deflected freekick

.....which in all fairness is 3 more than Johnny Russell
