As the eyes turn to Burnley

Ings reminds me of Shane Long.. Forever running the channels, always working, putting the defence under pressure, decent goalscorer...

I tipped Burnley to do well this season, they have a solid outfit - similar to Reading under Brian McDermott..

Without sounding bitter, they won't survive in the PL as they're not that sort of team - again similar to Reading under Brian McDermott. Fully expect them to come back down, but if they stick with Dyche, they'll be set for a a few yo-yo seasons I'd much rather have than be stuck in midtable in the NPC every year.

Burnley can expect an exciting few years ahead of them.

I'm quite jealous actually. I don't think Derby will go up, and next season will be massive for McLaren as we'll all be expecting to finish in the top 6 again - as will Sam Rush.

I've said before on here that I hope you go up. I just hope it's via the play offs! ;-)

Burnley have no money. We're skint! This is our last year of parachute payments (£8m) and then we're back to income of circa £7m. We've been getting our house in order since we came down though, so despite the lack of income, our expenditure is low, hence the mainly unknown squad, and lack of strength in depth. We really need promotion this season if we are to continue competing at the top end of the Championship for a few seasons. If we don't go up this season I think it'll be constant battle against relegation and ultimately down to the third tier where our club can compete.

It's a shame as before 1979 we'd never been out of the top two divisions, playing mainly Division One football. Jimmy Hill started it with abolition of the maximum wage, but the game has changed now where traditional town team clubs - Burnley, Blackburn, Preston, Portsmouth etc, can't compete at the top level without seriously overspending or the backing of a rich chairman. If you have asked in the mid 80's we'd have said we're a First Division club really, but have fallen on hard times. Right now I'd argue we're a 3rd Division (League One) club punching above our weight.

Good post ClaretForEver.:)...

Burnley's board will need to back Dyche if they go up or another cub will tempt away, A bit like the Coyle situation.

As far as I am aware, the directors pocketed most of the PL money last time by claiming back loans with big interest. Not much spent on better players.

A mixture of all sorts to be fair, although I'm still not convinced with the story it was all wages. Wages were a factor as we bulked up in most departments, on and off the pitch. We spent £2m on the Premier League pledge, where the chairman said the previous summer to attract season ticket sales, that if promoted they could have next year free. He didn't expect we'd go up! We've also learnt since that we were extremely close to administration in 2009.

We spent a couple of million doing the ground and lounges up - new turnstiles in the away end nearest the Longside as home fans were located (1,500). I think about £10m or so was repayment of director loans. We've also made £20m selling players - Jay Rod, Fletcher, Eagles, Mears, Austin. Since relegation we have also spend £3-4m in parachute money buying our ground back - we'd sold it due to the ITV digital fiasco, and paid rent (£300K/yr), with the understanding we could buy back at an agreed price within 'x' years.

If we are lucky enough to go up this year then we'll be starting from a healthier position than last time. Time will tell as there is still a long way to go.

It used to amaze me in the 60s and 70s how Burnley could keep finding and selling top players (especially wingers). Just a few of the ones I liked – John Connelly, Andy Lockhead (almost as good as Tony Hately in the air), Ralph Coates, Steve Kindon, Thomas (a winger whose first name I have forgotten), Leighton James (I liked him but some on here probably don't), Brian Flynn , etc. They had the best scouting system in the country.  I think the rot started when they began to buy players instead of selling them.

I had a good look around Burnley before one game in the 70s and it looked very run down. I dread to think what it is like now. But it you live outside the town in a village then it would be a good place to live.

Dave thomas.

I was gasping for us to sign him.

I thought he was better than Leighton James.

In the 70's it wasn't long after the final demise of the textile industry really. That carried on throughout the 70's, 80's and into the 90's. It's only the past 5-8 years we've seen some real investment in this town that was once the richest town in England due to cotton. Last year we were voted the most enterprising area in the UK, partly because Prince Charles has spent so long helping us since the race riots of 2000. It's getting much better but there's still a long way to go - we have some real specialist aerospace skills nowadays, also having links with Derby as there is a Rolls Royce in neighbouring Barnoldswick where many are employed, either directly or in supply industry.

Unfortunately, where Turf Moor is located you can't get away from having to drive through the more impoverished areas, whichever way you enter the town. You travel a mile or two and there are some beautiful areas, with housing many couldn't dream of affording.

If Ings misses a few games, the goals will dry up - perhaps gives good chance for Rams, QPR and Wigan to snatch 2nd.

Their confidence will be knocked if Ings is out for a few games or even more.

Will Ings be fit for the playoffs?

Ings and Trippier out for 3 weeks... Am I being deluded? If we beat Forest then we might go on a run so who knows. McClaren seems to have conceded second place based on his interview

3 weeks now for Tripps? Not sure where you've got that from, but he is doubtful tomorrow. The rumour is that it could be up to 2 weeks as his hamstring is a bit tight. He's not totally done it, but is likely to be rested. We've signed Chris Baird as a back up.

Ings will likely be out longer than 3 weeks, although we have Barnes who looks a good player. It's just that we have no back up for the back up! It's like we were for the first half of the season up top, and we're still likely to play 4-4-2.

Going to be an interesting next few weeks.

Just what I've been told by a claret supporting friend at work this morning. I assumed it was fact? Obviously not.

I can't see you dropping, you need mid table form for promotion, but I do believe if we beat forest we'll go on a run.

  • 2 weeks later...

With Vokes out for the season and possibly Ings also, Burnley will struggle for points while a strong Rams will probably get 19-21 points from the last 7 against easy opponents who have already beaten this season (bar draw against Uddersfileld). :)

88-90 points should be enough for 2nd.

They've got a tough run-in, but I doubt it. We should still be aiming for second though, this play-off talk annoys me.

Watford away next and Wigan, Ipswich and Reading in their last three. We'll have to see.

I would be staggered to see them throw it away now though.

Burnley fan here.

Interesting to see the comments regarding Ings and Vokes missing. Since Birmingham when Ings was subbed we have won 3 out of the last 4. Infact in the last 11 games where we have won 8 he scored 1 goal. As for Vokes, we scored the winner againist Blackburn once he had been subbed. Ings is due back for Boro - 5

games to go so it shouldn't cause too many issues hopefully for us at least.

Even at Charlton we had Trippier missing as well and we managed to win 3-0

Taking aside the chance of us dropping points are you hopeful of winning every game, considering you lost at home to Millwall who have won twice in the last 20 matches or so.

You have got a young fantastic team, but perhaps you need experience in the run in to win all the games.
