I've also heard good things about the beer festival at Diksmuide, near Dunkirk, but I've never been. If you want to venture further afield, Noordwijk aan Zee in Holland is my favourite seaside place - a short bus ride from Leiden (a stunningly beautiful mini-Amsterdam itself with some great bars). The Grünerløkka district is great - where alternative seems to be the norm. And Vigeland Park is a very nice place to wander around. (Seems also that every other post mentions the women in their selected city, so it is a little unfair to label me without bringing everyone else into the equation!)
