Brammie Steve
Has the pursuit of money taken all the joy out of football? Man City have effectively bought a league title this season. Perm any one from four clones and you can easily predict the top 4 or so teams in the premier league next season. As sonn as a team like Derby nurture a half ways great player in comes a moneyed club and off goes that player. Teams going into liquidation or at least adminisrtation thereby losing hard earned points. Is it possible to find players in the league who play for the love of the game and put personal happiness above a film star lifestyle. In the early 70s you could meet the Rams players on the streets of Derby and they would say hello. Now players seem to live in a different world to the rest of us. What if money was taken out of football so that players could just enjoy a decent (rather than obscene) standard of living. Would football really be the loser or would a missing something be rediscovered?
Ambitious
Football at the top has been dead for years! Manchester City have brought a title, before that Chelsea brought a title, Man Utd have brought the title in the past, as have Blackburn and hate to say it but you look far enough back, we could be guilty of doing just that all them years ago, it's all relative but the team splashing the most cash normally end up winning the title and ever since players were commercialised in such a way, it's been the way. And it still the case in this division, We are at the minute going against the grain in such a way and I really like we're trying to use our youth, and watch them grow as well as having such a big majority of British players makes it even better, however, is this out of choice? or lack of money and poor scouting? If we ever want to see success on any sort of national scale, we would have to do both. Although saying Football has been dead, the emotion in the two games, the city game especially was full to the brim of emotion, money spent or not! MuespachRam
Watching the scenes yesterday in Manchester, it would seem that money can buy you wahtever you want....including hapiness.... I hate all the snearing at City for "buying" the league....it has been bought every year for as long as i can remember.....no one ever mentioned United paying 30+ million for Ferdinand all those years ago, or Stamm, or Van nistelroy, or Rooney etc etc etc... Day
Man Utd have done it over a number of years bringing in 1 or 2 major £20m+ signings a season, they have also brought through plenty of players through the academy over the years. Man City and Chelsea on the other hand came from nowhere with foreign owners and spent millions in such a short space of time. Man City have spent £482m in the last 4 seasons, when have Man Utd ever gone to those extremes? Yes every club has bought the league in a way but Man City and Chelsea are in a league of their own, 2 clubs which I would take pleasure in seeing go into administration and dropping down the leagues. I see what you are saying but with all their money they very nearly fell at the final hurdle. It is on a whole new level now though- the money that the top teams have at their disposal is ludicrous. i84est
How else is anybody suppose to win it then if you want to be the best you need to buy the best and that costs money city needed to spend that much to catch up
Guest
Can never understand the jealously teams get because they spend money, teams have to do it to compete with the likes of Man Utd, who because of there support base and recent history will always have an advantage when attracting players because of this. City bought the league, but this can be argued about most teams that has won the league, didnt Clough break the transfer record whilst at Derby ? I also think that players are put into this bracket by fans, the players I know that have or are representing Derby have never been rude or anti social, and as to the obscence money, this is a select few, I have placed several people in Canary Wharf that earn as much if not more than footballers, and they have a much longer shelf life than footballers. randombc
People banging on about how much City have spent The starting line up of City yesterday £161 million The starting line up of Manure yesterday £169 million City have just bought lots of players very quickly making it seem like they've spent lots, but the investors wanted returns quickly, not wait around for youngsters to develop, which is unfortunate because it does affect the english game

SillyBilly
When you start descending into those sort of numbers, I don't think a difference of £30-40M is even worth talking about, both are capable of spending that on a single player. I agree that City have just had to play catch up considering United's dominance over the last 10-20 years.
Day
Possibly, unless I read it wrong it was posted as yesterdays starting line ups. Just of interest looked at the benches yesterday Pantilimon £3m Richards £0 Kolarov £17m Milner £26m De Jong £18m Dzeko £27m Balotelli £25m Starting 11 - £193m Bench - £116m Total - £309m Amos £0 Rafael £3m Ji-Sung £4m Nani £14m Owen £0m Berbatov £31m Hernandez £10m Starting 11 - £149m Bench - £62m Total - £211m Basically means get used to Championship football unless an Arabian takes a fancy to Chaddesden

Would football really be the loser or would a missing something be rediscovered? See what you mean Steve. The thing is, football is a massive worldwide brand. It's not just about players wages, it's all about sponsorship, marketing products, unscrupilous agents who'll collect a healthy fee for getting their clients top dollar wages etc... A lot of people make a lot of money from their names. It's true they all live in a priveleged bubble because their wealth says they can, so this means they can have an elite status, kind of like sporting royalty. I bet the last time Rooney walked to his local papershop he was still a relativley unknown player at Everton. If the money was took away, hopefully the players would remain, through a genuine love for the sport and not for the status it buys them.

Just checked and that is utd's starting line up vs swansea but that isnt city's and i think it's just 11 city players that cost less than utds.
