Clough asks about young Premier League defender

DERBY County have asked about signing a young defender on loan.

Their target is a 21-year-old centre-half at a Premier League club.

The Rams have five central defenders on the injured list – Dean Leacock, Russell Addison, Jake Buxton, Miles Addison and Mitch Hanson.

Right-back John Brayford filled in as an emergency centre-back in Tuesday's victory over Middlesbrough and midfielder Paul Green had to drop into the full-back role.

"We have got an inquiry in for a centre half but we don't hold out too much hope," said Clough. "If we are to get one in, they will have to be able to go straight into the team.

"We have got Mark O'Brien on the bench as an emergency, so there is no point bringing in another 17 or 18-year-old.

"The player we have asked about is 21 and we feel he could step straight in.

"Despite how well everybody did against Middlesbrough the other night, you would still like them in their proper positions.

"You can get away with it for a game or two, as we saw with Dean Moxey up front earlier this season.

"But we have no guarantees of any of the defenders being fit after the international break, so we have got that in mind as well."

Hes played 71 minutes so far James Tomkins, so maybe thats why Cloughys stated, "We have got an inquiry in for a centre half but we don't hold out too much hope,".

Nice thinking.

Also thers Kyle Naughton, normally a RB or LB but he hasnt had any premier league minutes.

Seamus Coleman also 21, hes played 175 Minutes usually a RB.

Ciaran Clark 21, played 178 CB.

Ciaran Clark would be my guess.

How do you know?

Because i'm in the know ;)

Plus you could probably work it out yourself, we've been linked with him previously, Nigel confirmed it, and he'd probably be here now if Houllier hadn't just joined Villa, he wants a look at every player on their books before he decides anything.

Was concerned by Clough's comment that there's no certainty any of the injured centre-halves would be fit after the international break. What has happened to Anderson? It seemed an inocuous injury at the time but it has dragged on.....
