I’m sure a footballer doesn’t go to get his coaching badges and is told “you will only be given your badges if you sign a sworn statement saying that you will only play boring statistical based football, you will not attempt to play an in any way entertaining attacking style whereby skill is fovoured over endeavour”. Lampard has said that he likes a pressing, attractive style. If he can provide it with what he has at his disposal come August we will have to wait and see, but surely there is room for some optimism?

So what does he do to pass his badges. Since it became mandatory to get badges there has been a drift by even top teams to a similar style of play, almost irrespective of the players involved. Goaley to cenrat defender (3 these days) mess around then out to a wing back. A few sideways passes, to the other wing then maybe a little forward run at the massed ranks! Lose ball and recycle.

Just like England against 442 Sweden?
