best of times , worst of times away from home

Recommended Posts

Watching the footage yesterday of the Fulham home match it made me think about the change in football crowd behaviour over the years . These youngsters nowadays don't know how lucky they've got it, when I speak to my nephews I sometimes feel like  Michael Palin hanging in the cell in Life of Brian. (Covered seats - they must think the son shines outta your arse sonny)    I can remember a fair few hairy trips in my younger days and some great ones - probably the most memorable might be when we practically took over the Hawthorns in 1996 having got promotion- felt we were really on the verge of good things that day despite the defeat .. The hairy side came when a West Brom fan checked a bottle at us for no reason I can recall after the game and it meant 4 stiches in the bonce when I got back to Derby .  Was at the Millwall play off away in 94 but weirdly didn't find that too intimidating as it was expected, Three of us getting chased by a pack of Bristol City fans through St Paul's was much worse . Fortunately I was an athletic boy then rather than the Kenny Burns apprentice 23 years at a desk is morphing me into .   My dad told me his most hilarious away day was him and his mates being challenged by a group of Leeds fans in the early  70's dressed as the gang from a clockwork orange( amongst others.)

Any thoughts from others -a bit of nostalgia always good.

Loads of similar ones, too many to recall.

Darlington in the third division was a good one, got there early on the Felix Flyer, so found a pub. It started filling up with Darlo fans and we felt the three of us had been Sussed out as Derby fans so we left, but about 10 of them followed us out. We tried to stay calm but we knew we were going to get done over as they closed in on us. 'As soon as we get round the corner, run for it', one of my mates said, but as we got round the corner we saw the Derby fans that had come off the Ramaway train, in a police escort stretching down the road as far as the eye could see. We turned round to confront our new friends from Darlington and they were legging it back to the pub.

The whole night was brilliant, we took over the ground, Derby fans climbing into the main stand, and won 1-0 with a thirty yard 'Gee screamer'.

The morality police will be here soon.

Worst away would without a doubt be Man U in Sheffield.. Bad day at the office.. Like you the Millwall playoff game was not that bad really..

Best away, when we took 10,000 to Sheffield United..

Although I agree entirely with the morality police on this subject, they should remember that they were different times. I personally never got in to any bother. I always did a runner before anything had a chance to kick off. Things did get hairy a few times but generally if you were careful you knew where not to go. The tribal attitude of the time was contagious however and goading was the norm, and if it did kick off in another part of the ground you gave your best verbal support to your own.

As for the two away days at Sheffield United, I don’t think any other games have come close to the atmosphere of either.

One of the very few games I went to “recently” was Watford at home in Mac1’s first year. We went into the Navigation in Alvaston without knowing it is an away pub. No bother at all and nice to be able to spend time with opposition fans without fearing for your safety.

I must be a pampered millennial because the worst I have suffered was getting a pie thrown at the back of my head by some muppet away at Coventry the season before they moved to the Ricoh.

To be fair, judging by the quality of most football ground pies you probably got more damage  than I did from a bottle .  Once had a sausage roll at Goodison that said this product is at least 20 % pork on the wrapper.
