Rowett raising the bar?

Many sides have shown over the years that you can get promoted with well functioning, cohesive teams. Clearly that's what we're working towards. Being better at playing as a team. We are lacking creativity up top but I suspect the 'difference' that kind of player makes will be covered in part by forcing mistakes, hunting in packs and attacking with pace. I don't see the loss of Ince being a massive deal, we'll adapt our play to accommodate that loss.

I also like the noises coming out of the club. We seem determined and focussed with a clear objective for the season. Belief and determination go a long way in the Championship. It might take a bit of a while to come together but I am optimistic about the shape were taking and the direction we're heading.

Bring it on.

All penalty takers miss, unless you know of 100%ers?

England are right at the bottom of the statistics in penalty shootouts, the worst nation in football. I think it partly stems from the attitude that penalty shootouts are some sort of lottery and you can't train/prepare for them. The rest of the world laughs at this attitude and prepares rather better than us.

Derby's record at spotkicks is so very poor I suspect it's something the same, with penalties a bit of an afterthought. Having seen three missed in pre-seasoin (Elsnik hit the post with one for the U23s) I hope Rowett moves quickly to do something about it. Asanovic was indeed probably the last Derby taker with a very good technique.

Quote your stats. Or have you just pulled that out of thin air?

Here: Why are so many penalties being missed across Europe? (19th Oct. 2016)

So what are the stats on Derby penalty takers - not just the last one they took!?!

Here are the stats about England and penalty shootouts from a BBC Reality Check page:

As for Derby if you go to the Statbunker page you can get the figures: https://www.statbunker.com/competitions/ForPenalty?comp_id=557

I went back 5 years (a random number - didn't look further to see if we improve or not at that point) and we've scored 23 out of 39 penalties in that time or 59% success rate. Instinctively that feels woeful. I can't look at every team over 5 years, but just viewing last season's figures (where we scored 5 out of 8) that puts us above:

  • Rotherham 0 from 1
  • Barnsley (1 from 2)
  • Brentford (2 from 5)
  • Norwich (4 from 7)
  • Fulham (4 from 10)
  • Gumps (5 from 10)
  • Reading (7 from 12)

So we're about 17th in the division in terms of successful spotkicks which I don't think is very good. Of last season's promoted teams Newcastle scored 3 out of 3, Brighton 10 out of 11 and Huddersfield 2 out of 3. So, we missed more penalties than the three promoted clubs combined.

You're article's interesting but it bemoans a Premier League conversion rate of 71% saying it's the lowest figure since 2001/02, yet Derby's conversion percentage is in the 50s!

So, I stand by my comment about England and the Rams :D

Ron Willems used to stick them in the top corner 95-96. Happy days.

But our penalty takers neither play for England nor are in the Prem. But the point about Prem penalty scores declining was to do with other variables than the taker, so is more relevant.

Perhaps if we had a deadball specialist in the team our stats might be higher?
