Mark Burton: "Brian Clough would be turning in his grave" at Derby style of play

Brian Clough would be turning in his grave if he saw the football Derby County’s under 18 and under 21 sides played against Barnsley this week, says Reds coach Mark Burton.

The Oakwell club’s under 18s side came back from two goals down to win 3-2 at Derby on Saturday but the under 21s could not repeat the feat after making the same trip on Monday and lost 2-0.

Burton – who emphasises possession-based, passing football – criticised County’s approach under manager Nigel Clough, whose father Brian managed the Rams then won two European Cups with rivals Nottingham Forest.

“Brian Clough was one of the best footballing managers this country has ever produced but his son just gets his teams to smash long balls down the channels,” Burton told the Chronicle.

“Brian Clough would be turning in his grave if he saw the type of football Derby play at all levels now. The first team do it and so do the youth teams. It is not the way to develop players.

“Our under 21s passed Derby off the park on Monday and, if they didn’t have Franky Fielding in goal, we would have scored.”

I'm sure we play good football at pride park. most our goals do come from balls along the floor. An example: None of Paul Coutts' assist have been in the air. Also who would we have to win the route 1 balls in the under 21 side?? not theo, Tyson or Doyle that's for sure they don't play that type of football. Finally it's not like we have to be Barcelona to win football games we are in the championship afterall.

Interesting that for a club that smash long balls to the channels, we have a creative midfielder that is being courted by Premiership teams and has just been called up to the U-21 squad.

I say stuff like this after being beaten in my 7 a side league by a team that defended well.

I Have watched all 3 play and all 3 are different. The first team pass and move not sideways passing. The u21s play to the wide men and get crosses in the box and like to win alot of corners especiallly throughout the season with Naylor and Val's height. Then the u18s play a mixture depending who is playing as they use the players strengths like if they have pacey forwards then alot of over the top balls etc.

This guy probably wants to get himself some fame and saying bad things about the best club in the world when he comes from the Relegation favourites is a comedy

We're not exactly known for our football. We do our fair share of long balls.

This season it started well enough but now we have a few away games under our belt we do hoof.

At home we're much better.

But there have been some awful football under Nigel in the years he's been here.

Don't see why we'd be singled out for it. We're not like Stoke, WHU who aim to play like this. Just sometimes it goes a bit stale. Movement and confidence dip.

We're ordinary.

Barnsley are crap but to fair do actually try and pass there way out from the back. We under clough have hit lots of long balls for the front men to chase, this year we have passed it more and do look to work the ball especially in the final 3rd yet don't overly play through Hendrick and Bryson and well we play is normally down to how well the front men get hold of the ball.
