Is John Motson really a Derby fan? I thought it was his son. Had a feeling he's a Watford fan. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

How did your son come to support Derby County? That’s a very good question. I was doing a match at the old Baseball Ground in the late eighties when sponsorship was still fairly new and a man came by with a bag – I was standing in the tunnel checking the teams – and he threw a pencil case at me and said, “Here, take one of these home for your son.” It was a shiny zip-up pencil case with the motif of the ram on for Derby - Eastern Electricity were the sponsors. I said, “He’s only one and a half” but he said, “Take it anyway.” So I took this gift home and my son was literally crawling across the floor as he couldn’t walk yet, and he latched onto the shiny surface of this pencil case and he was puzzled by the ram. That was it – he became a Derby fan there and then. And he now has two season tickets. It must have seemed like fate when Nigel Clough took over, given your history with his father Brian (as detailed in the book)… It was weird. What a character Brian was, by the way! When I have a day off, my son and I will go up to Derby together and watch the game. I’ve got a soft spot for Derby because my dad was a Derby fan, believe it or not. I don’t know why I missed a generation there. But yes, it is weird seeing Nigel there having known Brian as well as I did. I did many, many interviews with Brian and I kept some of them on tape. You wouldn’t get as spiky, sparky and contentious an interview with a manager now that you would get with Brian Clough. He was a one-off – there was no doubt about that.

Ahem.......three minutes of googling later... 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

OK, I'll stand corrected. We did see him at the Watford game once, in the car park, he was talking to the stewards, like he knew them. Maybe just a nice guy eh?

He's a Barnet supporter....he even sponsored Albert Adomah until 2010. His son however is a Derby supporter 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
