MuespachRam
What a GREAT read. Bringing back so many happy memoires, the Cox years were always the best in my opinion, some of the away days we had in the 80's were second to none..... Going to places like Wigan and Rotherham, Plymouth and Shrewsbury etc etc in division 3 and always taking a massive following, taking over the town, people coming out just to look at us being escorted from the train station to the ground. The 80's casual clothing, thousands of us wandering around god forsaken towns and cities, getting chase, chasing others etc. And then there was the football....sublime, King Arthur and Roy Mac, 4-4-2....they had a simple receipe for success................. an old experienced goalkeeper, two decent and not too attackingly adventurous fullbacks, two rock solid centre halves with little pace but hearts of lions, two fast and tricky genuine, beat the man, get to the by line and cross it wingers, in centre midfield, 1 hard tackling, win the ball and give it to the other centre midfielder who was the creater.....and then the two strikers....natural finishers, sometimes fast, sometimes big and strong, always brave...It really was THAT simple....and THAT effective too.. Arise Sir Arthur of Derby.....thanks for the memories Mr Cox, hope you are keeping well and enjoying life to the full. Once again..thank you. trekkie_ram
Great read, surprised it didn't mention Shilts, Wright, Deano or McMinn, to demonstrate how far we had come.
wittgenstein
Here, here to that. Happy days. I always feel Arthur Cox isn't given the credit he deserves for his role in our history. His Derby teams and record always suffer by comparison with the Clough and Mackay era, and then of course the Smith era which came after and was maybe more spectacular, tied up as it was with the move to the new stadium and so on Nevertheless, I loved those times. It felt like we were on a journey of constant improvement that was going to take us right back to the very top. And as I have said many times, if it weren't for the Maxwell meltdown I honestly think Cox would have had us challenging for the title by about 1990. He himself said that we were at a crossroads after finishing 5th and he was proved right. If the money had been there for the likes of Ray Houghton that he wanted to sign, we woul have goner on. Sadly, by the time Lionel Pickering came in and untied the purse strings it was too late and the impetus had been lost Never mind, it was still a brilliant time. Mark Wright, Dean Saunders and McMinn, but also Mickey Lewis and Jeff Chandler and Charlie Palmer. All players that were just right for the stage we were at at the time and all players you could relate to. Favourite of all our Bobby Davison of course. I'm a bit of a jumpers for goal posts man me! uttoxram75
Good days, the 80's rollercoaster was unbelieveable. "Why did I take it on? The most important thing for me is that Derby was, and still is, a football city," said Cox this week.. Arise Sir Arthur.......absolute legend. MuespachRam
The championship winning season under Sir Arthur was a million times better than that under Smith or King Billy. Not particularly the style of football, just the whole vibe of the day. And, imagine what we WOULD have done if he had just listened to his scout and signed Stevie Bull too....so close... As I have mentioned the days out we had following the Rams then will never be beaten, some of the places we went to and tore apart, metaphorically and physically..happy days... It was a just great time to be a teenager following your local football team on the up and up. Beating everyone in front of you, going to hell whole places and battling your way from the railway station and back again, never knowing what was round the corner. I would give anythign to go back to that era again, you never truly appreciate how great it was until it is in your memory. Scoring goals for Derby, Phillip Gee... OOOOOOOOOHHH Bobby Bobby...... Davison,Gregory,Mickelwhite and Phillip Gee la lalalalalalalalala.....Wally.....wallly.....We all agree that Georgey's better than Robson..... Arthur Arthur give us a wave.......MaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacFarland............There's only one Gordon Guthrie........

MuespachRam
Out of interest Uttox (or anyone else who was around for both) who do you think would have won a triple crown tournament... Cox's championship winning team Smiths promotion team Billy's play off team I am going for Sir Arthur's team, just because Bobby, Gee and Gregory were all unplayable. DerbyAnt
Brilliant years for me also and really miss those times. So many class away trips that I got up to nearly 75 grounds of the 92 watching the Rams. Thanks for the Youtube clip Morecombe Ram of the Rotherham game, and look at Christie after Gee's first goal. He's jumping around like a demented rabbit. It was a tight squeeze in the Colombo that night. Be nice to see the club show Arthur some recognition for those years. I'd go back to those days in a heartbeat.
trekkie_ram
Born in '82, my first game was in '90, but I had the season videos from '88, and watched them almost daily. My knowledge doesn't go back as far as '86, but that is the softest penalty I think I've ever seen - lol.

wittgenstein
I think Jim Smith's promotion winning side was probably the strongest of the the three to be honest But I know which one I cared about the most. I cried like a baby when Christie put that penalty in. I was thinking about Phil Gee today and how he just used to run onto things and smash it in. Unlike Tommy Johnson, who always missed them, Phil always used to beat the keeper in one on ones Can anyone else remember him running towards us from the half way line onto a through ball from Nigel Callaghan at Brammall Lane? I'd love to see a clip of that again. As he came streaking towards us we were going come on Phil and when he got to the penalty spot he smacked straight in. You beauty! I went to Brammall Lane once, and you couldn't see the nearside goal-line, only the bar and a bit of upright. I remember Brian Deane having a shot and we only knew it didn't go in from the other fans reaction.

Amazing day, wasnt ther something like 20,000 there that day and 11,000 of them were super Rams? Phil and bobby never looked like missing a 1 on 1. The christie penalty had me in tears just watching it on you tube. Oh to be back there again.
Saunders89
i did experience the title winning sides of the 70's and used to stand in the kids end, but to me this era was just so special (hence my user name), the away games were especially great, yeah we went down to the third but that enabled us to visit Grimsby and Bournemouth and places like that, the whole thing was magical, from Dean Court to Old Trafford (the day of Hillsboro was a great result for the Rams but not for football as it all changed after that), the away games we won at places like United, Arsenal, Spurs, Villa, and Newcastle were so very special, i would even say having the pleasure of watching Liverpool destroy us 7-1 was an honour because they were unbelievable at the time, i just wish we would of beat the scum more often in those days.
