Wildsmith 7.5 A couple of very good saves & not at fault for any goals. Good distribution.

Bradley 7 Some telling blocks & cleared off the line. Inspiring warrior at the back.

Nelson 5 Error for the 1st goal and should’ve scored from a corner later. Poor game today.

Cashin 8 Seemed to be everywhere; defended & attacked. Lovely skill to outflank Blades defenders & deep cross had their GK flapping.

Hourihane 6 Busy game and did a lot of tackling & tidying.

Bird 7 Good distribution but quiet; we miss his stealth further back?

Smith 7.5 Very lively and oiled the wheels nicely with very quick passing capped with his first goal in 6 years.

Thompson 6 Saw much of the ball and looked lively but he’s not a left wing-back so square peg in a round hole. Replaced at ht by Fozzy.

Ward 4 Very poor game. Very risk averse - his backward pass led to Nelson’s blunder. Doesn’t seem to have positional sense to play WB & our shape was lop-sided as a result.

Mendez-Laing 8 MOTM Played advanced forward and was a beacon of threat; almost scored a repeat of his Stoke goal. NML will be our top scorer this season if played regularly in this role.

Collins 6 Worked at the unglamorous stuff but no great threat to Blades defensively.

Subs:

Forsyth 7 Played LWB 2nd half & did a job.

Washington 7 Looked very promising with great mobility & carved an opening. Covered the ground quickly. An upgrade on James Collins. Not fit yet.

Waghorn 7 Looked lively and overwhelming fan voice to “sign him up”. Danced through 3 tackles in the box but his square pass was cleared.

Wilson 6.5 One great run which carved an opening & then one daft ball which led to their third but like the look of Kane.

An encouraging game with moments of high quality slick combination football by Rams but peppered with errors in parts. Disappointed by Joe Ward who seemed lazy and Nelson who had a poor day at the office. We must though remember Blades are Premier League who did look classy at times.
I’d say we need another midfielder as well as a goal scorer, but think we will be good enough to be highly competitive this year.
