I was privileged today to get a peak at the 1888 DCFC directors’ minutes book that will be sold on August 31 at a Sporting Memorabilia Auction, at Hansons Auctioneers, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire. It will be one of numerous lots in The Gerald Mortimer Collection, which includes several rare football programmes, match tickets and unusual memorabilia accumulated thanks to being a member of the press. Entries are invited for Hansons’ sports auction until August 3.

The book itself chronicles the birth of our club into the football league and our place in history as one of the forefathers of the game, the football league kicked off on September 8th 1888 almost 130 years ago !

There are many othe fascinating items, one of them being the letter penned by Gerald Mortimer on behalf of the first team when they went on strike calling for Clough and Taylor to be reinstated as managers after their resignation.

Also the reply !

their is a fixture list for the season before the football league started !

In the book it has the first team and a long list of trialists and reserves, it makes you wonder what they were told when starting out ! “ do you want to come and play for Derby County ? We are just setting up a football team ! A WHAT ??”

all good stuff and a real insight into the start
