Without VAR - that had "Stonewall penalty not given and then SK immediately score at the other end" narrative all over it. Could see how the ref was fooled into thinking he got the ball from his angle. A plus point for the system.
Andicis
This match is the exact reason we need VAR.
ViewsFromTheMiddle
Would've been a shambles not to give it after stopping the Korea counter attack.

If they stop play, it means the VAR refs are all unanimous in their little room. Incredibly unlikely the on-field ref will then disagree with them. But I agree, *if* that did occur, that would be shambolic.
Bris Vegas
3 minutes ago, SaintRam said: Thats why they've been told to increase the threshold that they flag for offside - so they dont stop play unless its obvious to the assistant. They let it continue, and then its reviewed when the ball goes out of play for a goal or corner. If someone flags for offside and they're wrong, it is not reviewed. The assistant for the Mexico game didn't follow that instruction, he flagged when it was close. That's just inexperience with the system. Flagging for offside when its a close call will cease to happen after they've gained experience using VAR. That makes sense to do that. Unlikely scenario, but what happens if the ball doesn’t go out of play for a corner for another minute and then they bring it back for offside? Does that minute get added on at end of the half? If not, that’s a minute wasted from the game and players’ energy consumed for nothing. The more technology and stoppages come in, the closer I think we will get to using a stop-clock and playing for a guaranteed 30 minutes with all other stoppages and the ball not in play resulting in the game clock being stopped. Hopefully another thing that will cease to happen is that the pundits will stop disagreeing with a room full of professional refs reviewing every angle and making a decision. Sooner or later they will realise how idiotic it makes them look. They don't look edgy, it's not being controversial. It's just stupidity

You'd treat it like playing advantage I think - after X amount of time, the 'incident' becomes less important to the situation. It's unlikely, following an 'offisde' that the ball fails to go out for a minute without heading back up the pitch and back. Basically becomes the 'offside' equivalent of playing advantage, the team keeps possession for a while, does nothing with it but it doesn't get called back as they've held possession for so long. Bris Vegas
Just realised they don’t do head-to-hesd results at the world cup to divide teams, instesd they do GD. Means Sweden beating S Korea 1-0 while not the best result for Mexico, it certainly isn’t a terrible one. A two-goal win over South Korea next weekend and a big Germany win means Mexico could probably afford to lose to Sweden on the final day by a two-goal margin and still qualify! Bris Vegas
“For Panama, it will be all about how they handle Hazard and De Bruyne because they won't have played against players with that kind of quality before.” “Total lack of concentration from Panama but they've got away with it. They won't have played against teams who think so quickly in those circumstances, but it's all part of the learning process.” Why are the BBC paying Mark Lawrenson to spout absolute crap? He’s supposed to be a knowledgable football pundit. Yet he evidently doesn’t know that Panama played Argentina and champions Chile in the Copa America, a recent friendly vs Brazil and obviously they had to face Mexico twice in qualifying - a team who drew 3-3 away at Belgium a month ago and just beat Germany 1-0. He talks nonsense.
