The big teams in World baseball though are, despite sending weak sides, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the United States, and they are ranked some way ahead of others like Cuba, the Dominican Republic and such. Cuba tends to be quite successful in some of the older tournaments though. Surely you would have done some basic fact checking before posting it as an example though. Below are a selection of players from the current USA team and the team that failed to make the semi finals in the 2013 World Baseball Classic after being defeated by the Dominican Republic. Even us dummies on a Derby County forum can see that you can't play all the final group games simultaneously ! Even the idea of going to penalties for a draw in the group stages seems flawed. Potentially a team could play extra-time in every one of their potential 7 games (up to the final) - which is an extra 3.5 hours of football. Unless they go to penalties after 90 mins in the groups, just to settle the tie. But that would be unprecedented and lead to a lot of bore draws The only conclusion you can come to is that they have just not thought it through! Or that their principle priority is not running a fair football tournament, but increasing revenue streams for FIFA and the national associations. Let's see who that list is missing then shall we from the MLB MVP awards in recent times: Mike Trout: 2014 and 2016 MVP Chris Bryant: 2016 MVP Josh Donaldson: 2015 MVP Bryce Harper: 2015 MVP Clayton Kershaw: 2014 MVP Keep in mind that there are two awards per year, one for each conference, and none of them from 2014-16 accepted to join the team for 2017. It's a well known issue in American sport in general though, patriotism isn't in their sporting DNA. One thing to note, because your post showed you have a really limited understanding of MLB, or you're very keen on misrepresenting the situation as you realise your point was weak from the get go. It was well clever to try and call the MVP award from the Championship series the "[year] MVP" award though, despite it basically being the "man of the match" for those playoffs, rather than the best player in the competition award, as the above is. American sports tend to hand out awards like candy "[something very specific] All Star side", but the list you made above you could instead put like: Player Name - Made team of the year for one of the conferences 2006, 2011, 2013, won a man of the match award 2014 It seems a lot less impressive looking at it in this terms. We shouldn't need to talk about it like that though, because it's pretty common knowledge America's best declines to participate in Team USA, and most rest up before the next MLB season, those that do go are generally trying to raise their profile, but they aren't strong squads. Bris Vegas
Euro 2016 was the worst major tournament I'd seen in my lifetime. It was a total mess and the fact that Portugal managed to win it by finishing 3rd in their group and then going on to play the mighty Croatia, Poland and Wales for a place in the final was some kind of sick joke. It was a shambles of a tournament, and an increaed World Cup would just be the same.
