Managed to get us the closest we've been to promotion whilst playing the most entertaining football we have seen since Jim Smith.

Can't be that poor.

I think the general consensus in the footballing injury is that he's a world class coach but when it requires so nitty gritty management he isn't the man.

He hasn't got the great white shark eyes of a Ferguson or a Pep, sat on the bench, slowly chewing gum. Cross hairs on strolling midfielder.

Wouldn't argue with that as such but he's no wally, got something about him even if he's not seen as a top manager, to call him poor is incredibly harsh.

Boro league cup, Twente Eredivise, Derby so so close to promotion.

Hard not to think where we would be right now had Newcastle looked elsewhere, despite the absolutely pathetic collapse v Reading he was dealt a bad hand with injuries.

Was a difficult season as Mel wasn't pulling all the strings, had he been here with that £25m, what if what if

I think he is a great bloke. As someone said, if you were recovering from an injury or a young player he would be the best. Was he not Jim Smith's Asst Mgr with us in 1995. and also Fergie's when they did the 1999 treble?

Do you not think a better man manager would have got the player's heads right during that crazy capitulation, though? Towards the end of that season you could see the panic in their eyes and the weight of expectation across their shoulders.

Excellent head coach, questionable team manager.
