What sort of headphones do you have?

I assume you have the style that goes around the ear entirely already. It then generally just becomes a question of quality (or more specific where manufacturers focus their efforts).

My gaming headset, for example, prevents me from hearing everything in my house except the dog howling, which is useful to alert to me to someone at the door, but it's mightily expensive + a lot of that expense is likely going towards the quality microphone that you dont need.

Not sure how it would fare on a plane.

Bose have a number of headphones that specify airplane noise as one of the things you should buy them for, like QuietComfort, so if you already have nice headphones it may be a need to step up to something like that. If you are already using headphones that claim to be able to deal with plane noise then you either need to do some digging, I'm sure someone online has done some thorough testing, or you need to get into those eye wateringly priced headphones you see in studios.

I guess it really boils down to your budget. Digging for the best possible buy isn't too tricky you just have to dig in the right places. I'll probably end up digging for you this evening if you've not come to a satisfactory destination.

How do you mean overpowered?

I have the Bose Quiet Comfort 25, when you click that noise cancellation on you can barely feel a thing, I get Bose stands for buy other stereo equipment but I absolutely love them.

all my other earplugs and headphones are high quality in terms of sound, but do not drown out the ambient noise of a plane. I am not sure you've ever flown, (I know you won't fly nowadays) but planes have a loud humming noise from the engines and turbulence. This can be heard and varies depending on where you sit on the plane.

I'm away in a couple of weeks and am toying with the idea of some noise cancelling headphones.

If you have a Bose shop go check the 25's out, I've got a big portable air con unit in the bedroom, slightly smaller than a jet engine but I can't hear it at all with these on without music, just listening to podcasts.

Over the ear and the most comfortable pair I've ever had, use them when doing the forum podcast, never feel tight or pinch the head. If they ever die I'll be hunting out another pair.

Think they've come out with a wireless version now as well.

That's the ones but if you go to the Outlet store you have one near Alfreton a Bose store should be in there, pick up a reconditioned pair that's how I got mine, look totally brand new, you get the same Bose warranty as they would be new and save yourself around £80.

Sennheiser the Ferrari of the headphone world, Beats are ****....

If you use the Seinnheiser headphones they are made to reduce ambient noises, if they have a hinge with a 45 degree movement to the arm they are DJ good, pointless if the sound infiltrated the other ear because mixing would be impossible and the monitor speaker redundant.

They have DJ8 HD which are the dogs dangly bits, if your Sennheiser is letting in noise you can replace the cushion pads which should help, I have about 5 pairs from HD25 that are one of the cheapest on the market to the DJ8 but none of them let in noise.

Definitely think Bose is your best bet for noise cancellation.

Sennheiser might be good too but I've no experience of them.

Just get something specialised for it. It's not like the sound quality is reduced because of it.

Genuine active noise cancelling, you won't go far wrong with the Bose over ears, can also pick them up usefully cheaper at the Dixons in the airport.

If loudness when playing back music isn't a priority, you won't go wrong with them.

Thats what mine are, active noise cancellation, you will struggle to find any bad reviews, only downside is the price but if you use them a lot it's worth investing a bit. I've had sooooo many different pairs in the last couple of years that I gave up on and either returned or stuck on eBay it's nuts, had these around 3 months now and I'll guarantee you won't hear the plane.
