What is much more likely is the players had not yet met McClaren and they were downhearted in the first half at the loss of Clough. After meeting McClaren at half time, with a motivational half time speech, they felt a bit more confident. Then when one goes in and it's 4-2, it feels like the beginning of something special. And it was, not just at 4-4 but for the whole season.

It's not totally unthinkable to believe that a man who has managed England might have a few rousing words in his locker to motivate a team of players.

That doesn't necessarily point to a hapless Wassall though. Clough's sacking was HUGE, don't underestimate that. Wassall was the fall guy. Someone had to do it. I think half the reason McClaren didn't take over immediately was for this exact reason. The players had to get it out of their system somehow, and the 45 minutes Wassall managed was an exorcism of the demons that we needed.
