Something for the stat lovers

I've been monitoring the average league position of the top clubs opponents as this gives a good indication as to which teams have had the hardest games and which have them still to come.

Hull for instance have had the hardest games of the top teams so far. The average league position of their opponents at home is 11.11 and away is 11.40  Their overall average is 11.26.

Boro's average league position of opponents is 14.26, the second highest ('easiest') of the top clubs. In their home games, it is 18.33 which suggests they've had a fairly easy run. So far they have played Bolton, Brentford, Bristol City, Charlton, Fulham, Leeds MK Dons, QPR and Rotherham so not too taxing.

They are still to play home games against Birmingham, Brighton, Burnley, Cardiff, Rams, Hull, Ipswich,  and Sheff Weds amongst others.  A far harder run potentially.

It's a different story away though where they have had the hardest games so far (10.60). Already they have faced Cardiff, Derby, Hull, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday,

Rams are somewhere in the middle of the top clubs (13.16 overall). Our home stat is 12.33 and away 13.90. This suggests the league position of our home opponents has been higher then those we have played away.

Other key teams 'scores':

Brighton H 15.00 / A 13.56 / Overall 14.32  (This is the highest of the 'top teams' so the 'easiest run')

Burnley H 13.40 / A 13.44 / Overall 13.42

To summarise, based on these stats, you'd think that Brighton and Middlesbrough will start to drop down the table a bit and Hull to pick up. Time will tell.

Based on where clubs are positioned now or when we faced them? For example when we faced Reading and they were near the top and on hot form it was a much more difficult game than if we were to face Reading now they've dropped off and out of the play offs.

Problem with accounting for games played is how meaningless the table is until about 5 games in at the earliest - probably closer to 10 games.

Yeah, it should be based on now as the table is a better reprisentation of the relative difficult of teams. If it was done on league position at the time it wouldn't really show anything, especillay the first 5-10 games of teh season.

I like this ...a lot.

Any chance you could upload the spread-sheet for us stattos to verify the calculations?

Instead of putting flags out at the ground like the 1884 fellas,  we could share prints of graphs and pie charts.

Good work.
