The Asian Cup is underway, Australia the Hosts.

Results so far:

Group A:

Australia 4 - 1 Kuwait

Korea 1 - 0 Oman

Group B:

Uzbekistan 1 - 0 DPRK

Saudi Arabia 0 - 1 China

Today:

Group C:

UAE v Qatar

Iran v Bahrain

Tomorrow:

Japan v Palestine

Jordan v Iraq

The First game was quite a laugh to listen to the commentary of. They were referring to Kuwaits "classy players" who had trials at "Notts. Forest". Good performance by Australia in the end. Looked edgy at the start, but settled into what they were there to do.

Iraq are a good side. But I would be really surprised if Australia doesn't win it.

Japan, Iran and Korea will have a lot to say about that.

Today's Australia v Oman, and Oman have somewhat of a history with Australia.

I think a lot of would be very surprised to see the quality in Asian Football. The standard of coaching at the youth level might be somewhat different, but the top level players definitely know what they're doing. One of the odd things in Asia is that they produce a lot of very technically proficient players, but tend to lack of the physical ability of many European sides.

Anyhow, score updates:

UAE 4-1 Qatar

Iran 2-0 Bahrain

Japan 4-0 Palestine

Jordan 0-1 Iraq

No draws yet. Today's matches:

Kuwait v Korea

Oman v Australia

Kuwait 0 - 1 Korea

Anything but an Omani win against Australia now will mean Kuwait are out and Korea are through.

Commentators are incorrectly saying Korea are already through, but the following results would see them out:

Oman beat Australia by n

Oman beat Kuwait by m

Australia beat Korea by p

When you consider this is the current situation:

Team [played], [Goal D], [Points]

Korea 2, +2, 6

Australia 1, +3, 3

Oman 1, -1, 0

Kuwait 2, -5, 0

That would give the following situation:

Australia 3, +3-n+p, 6

Oman 3, -1+n+m, 6

Korea 3, +3-p, 6

Kuwait 3, -5-m, 0

If +3-n+p and -1+n+m are greater than +3-p, then Australia and Oman would go through. p=1, n=1, m=1 (the smallest case) would be interesting as they'd be equal on goal difference. p>1, n>1 or m>1 would all lead to the goal difference being greater for Oman (depending on how many). Of course a draw between Australia and Oman would send Korea through.

As a side note, a Omani win over Australia, Kuwaiti win over Oman and Korean win over Australia could see Korea and Kuwait go through. A draw between Oman and Australia or an Australian win will see Kuwait out.

Australia in ominous form now, 3-0 up at half time.

A Stewart Attwell moment late in the half, with a goal ruled out to give a penalty for Australia. The "goalscorer" got his reward though, converting from the spot.

Australia have now had the following goal scorers this tournament:

- Timmy Cahill

- Massimo Luongo <= Looks absolute quality, plays for Swindon

- Mile Jedinak (pen)

- James Troisi

- Matty McKay

- Robbie Kruse

- Mark Milligan (pen)

7 different scorers in 2 games, with 45 minutes left to play here.

Oman 0 - 4 Australia

Brilliant performance from Australia against their bogey side. Completely outplayed them, Massimo Luongo, Matt Leckie and Robbie Kruse were outstanding, as were Matt McKay and Mark Milligan.

And like that it's 14. Oman and Kuwait are out of the tournament, though they both have a game to play. Korea and Australia are through.

Korea need to win their next match against Australia to top their group, a draw will do for Australia.

Tomorrow has:

DPRK v Saudi Arabia

China v Uzbekistan

The only way a team can go out tomorrow is if China and Uzbekistan draw and either DPRK or Saudi Arabia win.

Bbc report and even Tim cahil were surprised how easily oman gave up! Sounded like a cracking performance from the socceroos.

Thanks for the updates....I had forgotten about the tournament and not seen any of the matches.

I've got to back Korea, although I would be surprised if they actually won the tournament as they've not been in great form recently.  As Koreas current golden boy, lot of pressure is placed on the shoulders of Son Heung-Min and they do suffer from a shortage of top striking options. Although, like many of the teams in the K-league, while they can struggle for goals, they do tend to be a little stronger defensively.  With two 1-0 results it would suggest this has been the case, so far, this time around as well!

While Korea have kept two clean sheets, Australia appear to have no problem finding the back of the net, it should make for an interesting match when they meet each other!

DPRK 1-4 Saudi Arabia

China 2-1 Uzbekistan

...and with that there were 13. DPRK are out, China are through. China go through as they have beaten both Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan, and the table is ordered by results between teams ahead of goal difference. The winner of Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan will go through, with Saudi Arabia going through in the case of a draw.

Next up:

Bahrain v UAE

Qatar v Iran

A UAE win would send Bahrain home and the UAE through, as the UAE would have beaten Qatar, and even if they ended on 6, they'd go through on results between teams.

The same stands for Iran as they have beaten Iran, with Qatar going home. Could see it down to 11 teams left by tomorrow evening.

Bahrain 1-2 UAE

Iran 2-0 Qatar

...and like that it's 11. UAE and Iran are through, Bahrain and the 2022 World Cup hosts out.

14 matches played, not draws...

Tomorrow is:

Palestine v Jordan

Iraq v Japan

As the two winner play tomorrow, the only way anyone can go out is if there is a win in both games. A win for Japan or Iraq will send them through.

Palestine 1-5 Jordan

Japan 1-0 Iraq

The most interesting group yet, still no draws. Palestine's fate is an interesting question. A miracle win over Iraq, in the case Japan beat Jordan could be very interesting. This would make the top of the subtable between Jordan, Iraq and Palestine decide the outcome. In this instance:

Palestine 1-5 Jordan

Iraq 1-0 Jordan

Iraq loses to Palestine by p

This would mean all 3 would have one win each in this mini group. Making goal difference between them. This would be:

Jordan: +3

Iraq: +1-p

Palestine: -4+p

This would mean this result means that Jordan would go through ahead of Iraq in all such cases, while Palestine would need to score at least a 7 goal win (which would send them through on goals scored). Essentially, Iraq losing to Palestine and Jordan losing to Japan will almost certainly send Jordan through.

In the case that Iraq don't lose, and Jordan do, Iraq are through. If both Jordan and Iraq draw or win, Iraq will go on by results between teams.

So basically, if Iraq win, they're through regardless of what Jordan do. If they draw, Jordan must beat Japan.

Anyhow, there's still 11 teams with a chance of the last 8 in this competition, albeit with Palestine hanging on by the tiniest thread.

Anyhow, tomorrow is:

Australia v Korea

Oman v Kuwait

Australia and Korea are playing off for the top of the group, a draw will give Australia top spot on overall goal difference. Oman v Kuwait will only order the table in terms of 3 and 4.

Australia 0-1 Korea

Oman 1-0 Kuwait

Australia will face China in Brisbane next Thursday, Korea play the winner of Saudi Arabia v Uzbekistan, with Saudi Arabia going through in the case of a draw.

Australia's play was extremely promising, but equally Korea showed their defensive strength and structure. This matchup could well end up being the final. A defensive lapse from Australia cost them dearly, but a host of well crafted chance, one with required a stunning save, with another sending the crowd into celebrations (side netting, bounced out the back of the net too). Ultimately though chances count for nothing when not finished, but on another day it could have been a very different result. Australia had around 67% of the possession. The pitch was quite frankly terrible, and the game was swarmed by moths. Referee was also quite poor, but none of that seemed to have an impact on the match or result.

Overall, as things currently stand the teams that have stood out this tournament are most certainly Australia, Korea, China and Japan, while the UAE and Iran are coming along nicely as well. As things stand it will take something special to beat Korea, although I do have some questions over their attacking threat.

Didn't see the Oman v Kuwait game (same time as the Australia game).

Tomorrow:

Uzbekistan v Saudi Arabia

China v DPRK
