Speaking event: a few notes on McClaren

Last night went to one of these speaking events and Mr McClaren was there (along with ex-Derby defender Michael Johnson, a Premiership ref (Moss) and the Burton chairman):

Steve came across as much more charismatic than I previously thought - good storyteller. Jim Smith apparently nearly did him in when he first came to coach, as Jim insisted on 'one more' bottle of red every night at the hotel they were staying at for the first two months.

He seemed to hint that Adam Smith was abit of a bigtime Charlie and was not happy about being left out. He seemed generally dismayed with younger players and that they are mollycoddled far too much. He doesn't think younger players get much out of the under 21 system and prefers to send them out on loan for experience or train with the first team if good enough.

The ref, who was a decent bloke from the north-east said Will Hughes was very refreshing to referee, as his attitude is much more respectful than your average player today. McClaren mentioned Liverpool a couple of times in reference to Hughes and his future but whether that's an unconscious slip or an example of where he could play one day, who knows.

He also reiterated he is a big fan of the European director of football system, as it allows continuity at a club when there's management change - says that the Europeans/South Americans are far ahead tactically and technically but are probably behind the British when it comes to overall attitude. He is also a fan of pro-zone and Craig Bryson was commended again for the crazy amount of ground he covers.

Repton School host an annual speaking event and to raise abit of money for kids charities - was invited through one of my MD's suppliers.

McClaren was very engaging and quite theatrical with his stories - seemed to learn from his time at Twente, where the coaching and their training methods/schedules were all mapped out already and he could just watch and study the players for the first few weeks, which is obviously something similar he did here when he first arrived.

Seem to remember Smith away at Watford having a stinker and Mcclaren's reactions were of devastation and disgust!

Yes, McLaren said he runs over 13km every game and if he drops below it, they tell him haha

Johnno said that when Phil Brown was managing, they had comps as to who ran the most and Darren Moore liked to cheat by doing short sprints before the 'keeper took his goal kicks...

Johnson also told a nice story of when Oakley told him to walk up the steps at Wembley to collect the play-off trophy, as he was injured (club captain) and gutted to be missing out but was very emotional in being able to do that, as he romanced about all the greats who had done the same in some of the iconic FA Cup finals he watched as a young lad.

McClaren also said that when he first went to Wembley with Man Utd in the cup final, that when players went off the field after the warm-up, he told the reserve goalkeeper to stick around just so he could carry on and take in all the historic Wembley surrounding.

Be nice to see what McClaren really thinks about a lot of things.

His media interviews are by the book. Like he's graduated the media training they all get with straight A's

It's a tough place to come (it's not)

We know they're a good side (they're rubbish)

They're in a false position (no, they're rubbish)

They like to play good football (yep, in the sky)

etc etc.

No problem with it. Any manager who is more open and honest (Di Canio, Ferguson, Mourinho, Wenger, Clough...) usually cause controversy/debate. So the stock answers just do nicely.

The only time he's really shown his non-media face were after the Brum game when he said 'don't want to see the players for a couple of days' and after QPR's goal at Loftus. When Gibson mentioned silly passing at the back McClaren said 'no, no problem, that's how we want them to play and we'll keep trying'. He actually looked a bit annoyed with the question.

That's it! Two tiny little hints at what lies behind the mask. He even said Leeds are a 'good side'. Who's watched Leeds and thought that this season? Talking of false positions!!

Be good to listen to him away from our dangerous, spiteful national media. The folks who tagged him a wally and mocked him for years
