Yahoo! has announced plans to buy mobile news reader app Summly from the London teenager who invented it, likely transforming him into one of the world's youngest self-made multimillionaires.

The company did not disclose the terms of the deal it struck with 17-year-old Nick D'Aloisio, but the London Evening Standard said Yahoo! would pay between £20 million ($29 million) and £40 million.

The Wall Street Journal’s AllThingsD technology blog put the value of the deal at closer to £18 million ($US30 million), with about 90 per cent of that cash and the remainder in Yahoo! stock.

AllThingsD also described the deal as being an “acqhire” – also know as a talent acquisition – whereby the buyout is as much aimed at picking up a person or team of people as it is about the underlying technology.
