If anyone cares what the B*rton Mail thinks...

IT IS unlikely that Derby County target Johnny Russell will be unimpressed by the the fantastic facilities at Moor Farm tomorrow, and the chance of playing in front of home crowds 23,000 rather than 7,500 will surely also be a lure.

Therefore, it seems the only threat to the Dundee United striker"http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1" alt="icon1"> signing for the Rams would be a better offer from elsewhere.

Celtic have been consistently linked with the 23-year-old, but as the only major force in Scotland since Rangers’ fall from grace, they are generally linked with every talented Scot.

Bhoys boss Neil Lennon, pictured, has said that the club are keeping tabs on Russell, but it seems that their primary objective this summer will be replacing top goalscorer Gary Hooper, who is set to leave Parkhead.

And whatever Russell’s talents, he is not the same sort of player"http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1" alt="icon1"> as Hooper.

Celtic seem more likely to go for Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle, while Lennon has also expressed an interest in Portuguese striker Amido Balde – who could sign today.

Of course, given the financial clout of the Hoops compared to their league rivals"http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1" alt="icon1">, they could easily sign one of the above as well as Russell, but they already have the likes of ex-Ram Kris Commons, Georgios Samaras, Anthony Stokes, James Forrest and Tony Watt, who all play a similar role.

It may just be that Lennon is retaining an interest in Russell in case other targets fall through, or to keep this club’s fans on side.

Of the other clubs who could scupper Derby’s deal, Catania had bids rejected and do not seem to have returned, and Russell is unlikely to want to drop down to Sheffield United’s level.

Crystal Palace, now a Premier League side, and Huddersfield Town are said to still be in the hunt, but Rams fans can be hopeful"http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1" alt="icon1"> of a deal.
