my sons laptop is really slow at the moment.im not sure if its the broadband speed or the pc.ive checked the RAM memory and there is only 4gb free of 69gb.ive had a brief look on the net and it seems this could be a problem. What do i do now though as i believe its impossible to delete ram memory.Ive tried googling for an answer but to be honest i dont understand what people are saying.im not very tech minded.

Is the laptop slow when browsing the internet? Or is it just slow in general when booting up, navigating etc?

If it's option 1, then chances are it's your broadband. If it's option 2 then it could be a number of things.

From your description, it sounds like there's 4GB of 69GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD) space left, not RAM Memory.

HDD space is used for storage, the computer's operating system and your personal files etc.

RAM Memory is the memory used by programs when they're running.

Think you mean hard drive space, 69gb ram laptop isn't possible and no you can't delete ram. You can free up hard drive space by removing programmes that are not being used and storing music and photos on a USB stick or external hard drive.

Try an online speed test - that will rule out Broadband speed.

If it's general slowdown though it's most likely a RAM issue. You've probably got too much starting up when you turn the laptop on. As suggested, you might try uninstalling non-essential programmes.

Can you add Ram to a laptop ? if so its a doddle to do

download speed is 0.133 Mb/s

upload speed is 0.205 mb/s

That DL speed is very slow. You didn't have anything downloading when you were running the test did you?

The DL speed would certainly suggest that you're going to have problems surfing the net. Downloading would be a nightmare, and the upload speed suggest that you'd have trouble uploading photos etc.

To be honest, those speeds, particularly the DL speed isn't far off dialup.

You can add RAM but I've never done it myself.

Unless you're operating a 64bit OS though there's no point as it's capped off at about 3Gb with a 32bit system no matter how much you have installed.

I used to have 2Gb on my computer, and it told me I needed more, and could add another 2Gb, I did and I have no problems now.

If you've just had a new router then it suggests it's the router. The other thing to bear in mind, and I've had a couple of mates experience this - if you're subject to fair usage allowance on your downloads then even a single instance of what they deem to be unfair, ie. you download more than they think you should, then they'll throttle your speed.

Sky don't do fair use downloading, I think.

Call to Sky, they should be able to troubleshoot it. If you've got a cable (maybe with the Xbox) it might be worth seeing if it is any faster when you run the speed test. I'd imagine it won't be, and the problem lies somewhere between the exchange and your computer.

Have you got any dodgy phone extensions? Try plugging the router into the master socket and trying it again.
