Derby County defender Jason Shackell is in the running to be named the npower Championship's Player of the Month for September.

The 28-year-old defender has been a big hit at Pride Park Stadium since his summer move from Championship rivals Barnsley with a series of commanding defensive displays.

He has been an ever present in Nigel Clough's backline this season and has filled in as Captain in Shaun Barker's absence during the opening months of the season.

In September Shackell helped Derby to two wins - at Nottingham Forest and at home to Millwall - as well as a draw against Barnsley and a single defeat, at Coventry City.

His experience came to the fore in the win at Forest, with the Rams down to ten men inside the opening two minutes, while the home win over Millwall saw the Rams record their fourth clean sheet of the season in the 3-0 success.

Shackell is competing with Middlesbrough's Matthew Bates, Leeds United striker Ross McCormack and Southampton hitman Rickie Lambert for the award.

Meanwhile the four managers who have been nominated for the Championship's Manager of the Month Award for September are Tony Mowbray of Middlesbrough, Malky Mackay of Cardiff City, Nigel Adkins of Southampton and Hull City's Nigel Pearson.

The winners will be confirmed on Friday morning (7th October) at 10am on Sky Sports News.
