Still no full back cover?

Why do most people think having Deeney here is a bad idea? The way I see it is that he will be 3rd choice at a very small cost, Atkins and Severn can both go out on loan and gain valuable match experience, if Fielding or Lezgdins gets unjured/suspended then Deeney is there to sit on the bench and we don't waste a loan on a keeper that could be used for a LB or RB or whatever we need.

As soon as a goalscorer proves himself in this division he will be of to the prem, the trick is finding the next striker with the ability to prove himself.

100% agree.

You just really only have the options of looking abroad. Or at a current Champ player who's not quite doing enough but still gettin goals every season (Billy Sharp). Those players might look good enough to be able to come up with the goods. 20+ goals with nudge in the right direction.

Or League 1/2. Where a striker seems to be finding it pretty easy (Le Fondre). And bring them into a division you think is their level. See if they still find it easy.

As soon as a striker finds a Champ season easy to score, the PL clubs are like flies round sh1te.

You see silly bids like 3.5m for Graham.

20 goals is a lot of goals in a season. No PL team wants to miss the chance to grab these players before their rivals do. Hence they spend a fortune on Graham

In fairness, Peking was on the rivals site years ago, so not new to Rams forums! I think we need 2 players for each position, so I would agree we are short at the moment.

But there is still time...

Here, here, Peking is a legend of yeolderamsforums.com

I might be wrong, but weren't the messageboards full of anti-Graham chit chat when we had him on loan?

Goalscorers come in different shapes and sizes, but the main factor is usually how they fit into a team and their role within. I remember we were (slightly) linked with Zamora before he went to Fulham and I was glad we missed out on him. Playing a different role at Fulham the guy is awesome and that's after he had a season of stick from the Fulham fans.

Maybe the emphasis shouldn't be on buying a goalscorer, but building a team that allows 1-2 or more people to score lots of goals. This is where we seemed to be last season during the purple patch. That's what we did with Stevie Howard, although the thing that got us promoted in the end was Giles Barnes wonder goals.

('Giles Barnes' and apostrophes is a tricky thing. Imagine if Giles, surname Barnes, owned a Barn Shop.)

Despite all the signings at Pride Park this summer, we still only have two specialist full-backs in the squad, one of whom - Roberts - is in my view not good enough.

Assuming we don't strengthen in that area, who will be the back up? My guess is Leacock and Croft (if not sold) plus a fit again Green will cover right-back, with Shackell and Pearson covering left-back.

This is clearly not ideal, but hey, we've got six goalkeepers, obviously all of whom will definitely be required at some stage this season eh??

Does anyone else think Roberts had a bad season last time and will be much better this time round? This was before I saw the DET article today where he said as much himself. Doncaster were much better than us for the last 2 years he was there and they didn't seem to want him to go. He must have something.

This is what Uttox was getting at in another thread too. And if you get that blend i think it's when the football is truley exciting. Where no player is essential to make the team function. Like Barca or Spain. Or Germany say. It's really exciting to watch these teams play because every player is working for his teammates.

Kind of a hard thing to explain. Good to watch though.

Hope we get it right. The lows make the highs really good. But can we for once just be somewhere in the middle. You should get free anti-aging cream with Season Tickets.

Please explain the "proven Championship goal scorer" to me.. Kevin Phillips or Shane Long.?

Kevin Phillips type would only touch a top 6 side and a Shane Long type would move on to the Premier League, if not promoted already.. and also costing £5m plus.

So for a club like ours, we would have to buy a player who was a decent scorer in League 1, SPL or in the Premiership reserve teams and that would only be a loan deal at most.

That's how I see it anyway.

I have said this previously lets look at it is this way

Look at the top scorers in Championship, they are either promoted into the Prem, being brought for the prem so not moving to Championship side. Then you look at the strikers outside of this bracket who are championship proven there is no one I would actually jump at the present and say I would have him here.

When will people who are moaning, happy etc realise it takes 11 players to play the game. If we had the like of Rooney up front there is nothing to say he will be a top scorer if the rest of the team is not right and they can't get it to him.

Eastwood was a top striker to all reports before he ended up at Coventry they have nothing in midfield etc done nothing.

Full back to proven Championship strikers again, we'll be talking about LOG and profit margins in the concourses in a page or two.

Going back on topic slightly

I don't see our full back issue as a major problem, look at all the other Championship clubs and not many have 2 natural left and right backs.

Right back we have Green and Leacock that can cover for a few games, Brayford (touch wood) hasn't had any long spells out with injury, if he did the loan market is there to be used.

Left back I'd like to see us get left footed cover or even a replacement for Roberts, Brayford out on the left isn't a solution.

Worried? Not in the slightest, thinking about getting a refund? No way Pedro.

September 1st and no left back cover? I'd be concerned yes.

Your right. Everything is about "20 goal per season striker" lately.

What i want is a LB for a Barker-type fee.

;)
