Relegation battle more exciting than Title battle

There are currently 6 points seperating the bottom 10 teams in the Premiership while it is a two horse race for the title and one is almost out of it. Their have been some cracking matches this year featuring teams in the bottom half and I would suggest that not only is this the most exciting premiership season ever (to this point) but that the relegation battle is the best part of it. Anyone disagree?

Totally agree. It's the titanic battle of the "B's" vs the "W's".

Blackpool, Blackburn, Birmingham, Wolves, West Ham, Wigan, Wolves.

The thing is, they're all playing quite well. There isn't a poor side amongst them.

West Ham were excellent in beating Liverpool yesterday and must have turned a corner. Birmingham beat Arsenal in the League Cup Final. Wolves have beaten Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The battle for the title looks over though Arsenal still have a small chance. Strange title this year as Man Utd haven't played well but are coasting towards it.

Another great battle looks like being between Man City, Spurs and Chelsea for the two remaining Champions League slots.

A truly mouthwatering end to the season.

This is nothing new really, it usually is more exciting at the bottom for a neutral.

Although I hate west ham, when they were last down here all we got was west ham week in week out and how they have some kind of devine right to be in the premiership. a bit like newcastle last season. on tv every week!

Err....well, it is really. That is the whole point of this thread, isn't it?

This season is potentialy the most exciting Premiership relegation battle ever. There has never been a Premiership without one poor side.

West Ham are going to be more newsworthy as they have the richest Premiership history and the most to lose as they have the biggest wage bill.

I think you're right Toady. I would not put money on the three to go down at this moment.

Birmingham, won the League Cup, decent chance of making the FA Cup semis yet still in the shizen unless they win both games in hand.

I know it's not popular to hope for the bigger team but I was gutted that Birmingham won the League Cup. I really want Arsenal to win a bunch of stuff this year and prove that you can play champagne football and still win. Would love to see Derby use the Arsenal model, albeit on a less grand scale for the time being. Ha! Fat chance :-)

I think Villa will be safe.. Imagine if they went down though, having spent $18mill on Darren Bent.

B'Ham in the NPC playing Europa League football would be a joke too.. Wigan for me are down, although very close, they've got some really tough games to play.. And West Ham look like they've turned a corner and could end up in midtable.. Funny as Avram Grant was on the verge of the sack not so long ago.

Wolves and West Brom IMO are too good to go down.. They're both sitting ducks though, referee decisions will play a huge part in their survival.

Who does that leave, Blackburn and Blackpool. Probably the 2 most unpredictable teams in the league.

I'll go for Wigan, Brum and Blackpool to go down. But 100% agree, this is by far the best relegation battle that I can remember, and 'Should' get more coverage than the top 3 now as Man Utd are predictably going to limp to the title.

Not a good day for the teams in the relegation zone. West Brom the Big winners:

Today's results

Blackburn 1-1 Birmingham

Bolton 3-0 West Ham

Chelsea 1-0 Wigan

Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

Sunderland 2-3 West Brom

Tottenham 3-2 Stoke

Wolves 0-3 Everton

Still tight in the table, bottom 11 seperated by 8 points:

9 Newcastle 31 2 39

10 West Brom 32 -13 39

11 Fulham 32 1 38

12 Stoke 32 -3 38

13 Sunderland 32 -10 38

14 Blackburn 32 -12 35

15 Birmingham 31 -12 35

16 Aston Villa 31 -14 34

17 Blackpool 31 -18 33

---------------------------------

18 West Ham 32 -18 32

19 Wolves 32 -20 32

20 Wigan 32 -23 31

Two big games tommorrow:

Blackpool v Arsenal, 13:30

Aston Villa v Newcastle, 16:00

If Villa and Blackpool win, it'll be hard for the bottom 3 to stay up.

West Ham IMO are too good to go down, their starting 11 is far superior to those around them.. They should be midtable, had it not been for some terrible luck on their part.

I said the same about Wolves, but with Kevin Doyle getting injured and todays horror result they must be feeling pretty down right now. Will be tough for them.

Brum, Blackburn and Blackpool.. Surely one or at two of this group will go down, they have to. Probably Blackpool, but then again they`ve got tonnes of home games left to play.

West Ham will not go down.. Thats all I know.

Table

9 Newcastle 31 1 39

10 West Brom 32 -13 39

11 Fulham 32 1 38

12 Stoke 32 -3 38

13 Sunderland 32 -10 38

14 Aston Villa 31 -13 37

---------------------------------

18 West Ham 32 -18 32

19 Wolves 32 -20 32

20 Wigan 32 -23 31

Some big games on Saturday:

Birmingham v Sunderland,

Blackpool v Wigan,

Everton v Blackburn,

West Brom v Chelsea,

West Ham v Aston Villa,

Wolves, Stoke, Newcastle, Blackburn & Fulham don't play due to cup games.

The bottom four need to pick up wins soon, a great opportunity for Wigan, West Ham & Blackpool to end poor form. If they lose, it'll be an uphill task.

I think Wolves will stay up just with Blackpool, West Ham and Wigan going down.

The survival target of last season (31 points) has been meet by everyone. I personally think the traditional 40 points will be enough to stay up.

Villa (with a stoppage time winner v West Ham) should be safe, West Ham picking up bad for at the worst possible time. Great win from Wigan, elevates Wigan from last to 17th, Blackpool in the relegation zone for the first time this season and looking doomed. Birmingham should be safe now, Sunderland should also but need to strengthen in the summer after losing Bent. Blackburn still in deep trouble, especially if Wolves win game in hand v Stoke City.

Next weeks fixtures

Saturday, 23 April 2011

Aston Villa v Stoke, 15:00

Blackpool v Newcastle, 15:00

Some cracking bottom of the league clashes coming up.

Still to play..

Stoke vs Wolves

Blackpool vs Stoke

Brum vs Wolves

West Ham vs Blackburn

Wigan vs West Ham

Stoke vs Wigan

Wolves vs Blackburn

I've included Stoke (not likely they'll go down) but they've got a huge part to play as they face 3 of the bottom 6 in the next few weeks.

West Hams last 3 games are Blackburn (H) Wigan (A) S'Land (H) has the makings of 'great escape' written all over it.

Wolves last 5 games include Stoke (A) Brum (A) West Brom (H) S'Land (A) Blackburn (H) all bottom half clubs.. If they go down they can only blame themselves.

Blackpool have a poor home record and 2 more away games at Spurs and Man Utd I think they're doomed and will finish bottom of the pile.

Wigan and the loser of Wolves/Blackburn on the final day to join them.
