Derby County will be without defender Russell Anderson, who has a groin injury and is expected to be sidelined for three weeks.

But fellow defender Jake Buxton (groin) and striker Chris Porter (hip) will be on the bench.

Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd and keeper David Marshall could shake off injuries in time to play, and loan signing Seyi Olofinjana is set to join the squad.

But Darcy Blake and full-back Kevin McNaughton face late fitness tests.

Match Preview

Having made the perfect start to their campaign by winning at Leeds last weekend, beating Cardiff would see Derby open a league season with two victories for the first time in 37 years.

Rams boss Nigel Clough's father Brian was in charge when Derby last won their first two league games, beating Chelsea and Manchester City in August 1973 - two months before Clough senior's reign as manager came to infamously an abrupt end.

Cardiff, knocked out of the Carling Cup by League Two Crewe in midweek (eh? BBC cock up), have won only one away match against Derby in the last 27 years. A win there on Saturday would be an early birthday present for manager Dave Jones, who turns 54 on Tuesday.

The Bluebirds drew their opening league match against Sheffield United last weekend and have started strongly in recent seasons. They were unbeaten in their first four matches last term and began the previous campaign with a seven-game unbeaten run.

Head to Head Facts

This is the 50th competitive match between these clubs. Cardiff have won 22 of the previous games and Derby 14, with 13 drawn.

Cardiff's last away win against Derby was on New Year's Day 2005.

Derby

Derby's win against Cardiff on the final day of last season means a victory on Saturday would be the Rams' third successive league win.

Cardiff

Cardiff's draw against Sheffield United was the only Championship stalemate of the opening weekend. The Bluebirds last drew their first two league matches in 1986/87.

If selected, defender Kevin McNaughton will be making his 300th appearance in English and Scottish league football.

Luke Varney is a surprise starter in Derby County's starting XI to face Cardiff City at Pride Park this afternoon.

Striker Rob Hulse failed an early-morning fitness test at Moor Farm with an Achilles injury, so he misses out.

Chris Porter is still struggling with the hip injury that forced him off at Crewe in midweek, so Varney comes in for his first Derby start since May 2009.

Elsewhere, Paul Green returns after international duty and Gareth Roberts is recalled at left-back in place of Dean Moxey after being rested in midweek.

Derby County: Bywater, Brayford, Barker, Leacock, Roberts, Bailey, Savage, Cywka, Green, Commons, Varney.

Subs: Deeney, Martin, Porter, Pringle, Moxey, Buxton, Doyle.

Cardiff City: Marshall, McNaughton, Hudson, Gyepes, Whittingham, Chopra, Bothroyd, Burke, Olofinjana, Drinkwater, Blake.

Subs: Heaton, Rae, Quinn, Gerrard, Taiwo, Matthews, McCormack.

Looks like Clough's hand was forced with Hulse injured and Porter not 100%, seems strange he's talking about him going out on loan one minute, the next he's starting.

Hopefully Varney will be out to impress, I doubt he will be bothered about Clough but other clubs looking at him.
