Exeter City have announced that striker Adam Stansfield has died of cancer at the age of 31.

Stansfield was diagnosed with bowel cancer following a series of tests for an abdominal complaint in April, after being admitted to hospital in March.

Stansfield, who also played for Yeovil and Hereford, scored seven goals in 19 appearances for Exeter last season.

The club made a short statement on its website after a 3-2 Carling Cup defeat at home against Ipswich on Tuesday.

Stansfield joined Hereford on a free transfer in 2004 and two years later moved on to Exeter, where he made more than 150 first-team appearances, scoring 39 goals.

Hi Derby fans, Exeter City fan here. I was so pleased to see that Derby observed a minute's silence for Adam plus wore black armbands. I would imagine Deano had some influence on this. Not everywhere observed it though so credit to those that did. Dean came down to Exeter on Sunday to visit the growing tributes of flowers, scarves and shirts that have been placed on our Big Bank terrace and here is a pic of the tribute that he left. Its been a very tough week for all involved with Exeter City, Stanno was much loved by the fans for his work rate and effort on the pitch, the guy just never stopped running and his loss has come as a massive blow to us. He leaves a wife and 3 young sons
