Just an interesting read on the telegraph website :D

IT’S been a while since Derby County had their very own 20-goal-a-season marksman.

The last player to achieve the feat was Dean Sturridge in 1995-96, when his goals helped the Rams win promotion to the top flight under the management of Jim Smith.

Here, we look back at Derby’s top scorers from the past 10 seasons:

2012-13: Jamie Ward (12 goals) – The diminutive front man managed to top the scoring charts, despite missing three months of the campaign due to persistent hamstring problems. Sometimes employed wide on the left, sometimes through the middle, Ward’s goals all came in the space of 18 appearances – and 29 in total.

2011-12 Steve Davies and Theo Robinson (12 goals) – Davies’ time at Pride Park was plagued by injuries but he was joint top scorer on this occasion, along with fellow striker Robinson. The former left for Bristol City last August, while the latter ended the 2012-13 campaign on loan at Huddersfield Town and has now been made available for transfer.

2010-11 Kris Commons (13 goals) – The former Nottingham Forest man delighted and frustrated in equal measure for the Rams. Capable of creating something from nothing, he finished as Derby’s leading scorer even though he left the club to join Scottish giants Celtic in the January, with his contract at Pride Park due to expire at the end of the season.

2009-10 Rob Hulse (12 goals) – This was the second year running that Hulse had ended up as top scorer at the club, though he netted six more the previous campaign, albeit in more games. The target had man turned down a £4m move to Middlesbrough early in the season but, with his contract running down, was eventually sold to Queens Park Rangers for £750,000 plus add-ons in August 2010.

2008-09 Rob Hulse (18 goals) – Hulse exceeded his own expectations in his first season with the Rams, having battled back from a double leg break at Sheffield United. Paul Jewell signed him from the Blades for £1.75m and the former Leeds United front man was virtually ever-present. Derby struggled to 18th following Jewell’s departure but Hulse was voted player of the year.

2007-08 Kenny Miller (six goals) – Miller’s meagre tally was enough to earn him the Rams’ top scorer accolade in their disastrous Premier League campaign. The Scotland international was brought in by Billy Davies from Celtic for £2.5m and, following relegation, returned north of the border to join Rangers. He will be remembered for scoring a spectacular winner in Derby’s only league win of the season, against Newcastle United at Pride Park.

2006-07 Steve Howard (19 goals) – Having joined Derby in a £1m deal from Luton Town, Howard’s goals were key in helping the Rams achieve promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-off final victory over West Bromwich Albion at Wembley. The powerful target man featured in every game and was voted player of the season.

2005-06 Inigo Idiakez (11 goals) – The cultured Spaniard was already a fans’ favourite, having been named player of the year the previous season. The fact that the set piece specialist topped the scoring charts this time around from midfield (including four penalties) probably highlighted Derby’s goal shortage more than anything else. Idiakez left in the summer of 2006 to be reunited with George Burley, the man who brought him to England, at Southampton.

2004-05 Grzegorz Rasiak (17 goals) – The lanky Polish striker offered an aerial threat but also a neat touch and his goals were instrumental in Derby reaching the play-offs, where they lost to Preston North End in the semi-finals. Rasiak ended up joining Tottenham Hotspur for £2m on transfer deadline day in August 2006, to the frustration of manager at the time, Phil Brown.

2003-04 Ian Taylor (12 goals) – The veteran midfielder proved to be an influential figure after being drafted in from Aston Villa and made captain by manager George Burley. A tough season saw Derby finish fifth from bottom but Taylor was a bright point, missing only four games, all due to suspension. Half of his goals came from the penalty spot.
