We have only 6 players with more than 90 caps at Champ level or above, including injured Barker.

Roberts, #Barker, Tyson, Ward, O'Connor, Keogh.

"Experienced championship players" have been replaced with younger players who Clough and co think have the hunger to succeed at this level. Obviously on cheaper wages. Younger players values ought to rise as they are playing at a higher level than they were when signed. Coutts is 5 years younger than Green. Keogh is two years younger than the player he replaced; Shackell. Jacobs is 7 years younger than Croft/ 11 years younger than "Bavies". Bryson replaced Savage who was 8 years his age or so.

Some teams are capable of packing their sides with experienced players. Huddersfield's Grayson has got a very young side riding on a wave of energy following their promotion. Our side is of a simaler age. All the other teams have line ups with around half the squad with players aged 27 or over.

The relatively young age of the squad is the best thing that has been achieved.

Brian Clough did the same thing building a side with young players e.g. Mcfarland 19, robson 17, mcgovern 19, webster 24, hector 24, Ohare 22....etc but the last signings added experience and know how - mackay 33, green 27, and the wonderful willie carlin 28.

That seems to be the best strategy. Build a team that grows together.

I can only think of 5 currants off the top of my head :-

Red Currants, White Currants, Buffalo Currants, Black Currants, do Raisins count ?

I found this about their growth habit, not sure how it compares though ?

All forms of currant are deciduous shrubs, fast growing under optimum conditions. The plant is a multiple-stemmed clump, to 5 feet high and as broad, but is suitable for training as a standard. Annual growth is in a single flush in spring. The roots are superficial, fine and easily damaged by frequent cultivation.

So in comparing the other squads in the top half we've learned that we have a younger one than most. What can we glean from it??? Pretty much nothing...

Or that if we keep them developing together add a sprinkling of experience at the appropriate position at the appropriate time they could grow into a team to take us from the Championship and into the Prem.

Hang on...Just a few more points on this....

The main gist of that was, yep we have a young squad of mainly inexperienced players at this level, but with plenty of hunger. They will once again get turned over by the more experienced sides during the season, but should surprise a few of the more favoured sides as well.

Another way to put it is to break the current squad up into :

Experienced established championship players

(34 ) Roberts 510; 74 Rams caps, 269 caps for Tranmere, 141 caps for Donny

(30) # Barker 355; 98 Rams caps, 134 caps for Blackpool, 123 caps for Rotherham

(30) Tyson 349; 26 Rams caps, 176 caps for Red Dogs, 78 caps for Wycombe

(27) O'Connor 279; 6 Rams caps, 215 caps for Donny

(24) Brayford 233 76 Rams caps, 81 caps for Crewe, 77 caps for Burton

(26) Ward 221; 57 Rams caps, 63 caps for Blades, 67 caps for Chesterfield.

(26) Keogh 249 7 Rams caps, 91 caps for Cov, 40 caps for Bristol C, 73 caps for Carlisle

Players that have proven themselves at this level, but still lack experience.

(24) Fielding 156; 67 caps for Rams, 41 caps for Rochdale, 36 caps for Wycombe

(25) Bryson 272; 51 Rams caps, 118 caps for Kilmarnock, 95 caps for Clyde

(27) Buxton 242, 46 Rams caps, 151 caps for Mansfield, 40 caps for Burton

(24) Coutts 136 6 caps for Rams, 77 caps for Preston, 53 caps for Peterboro

Players with some experience, but still adapting to this level

(31) B Davies 398; 48 Rams caps, 67 for Notts Co, 155 for Chester, 115 for Shrewsbury

(23) Robinson 189; 57 caps for Rams, 45 Caps for Huddersfield, 41 caps for Hereford

(25) Sammon 185; 6 caps for Rams, 32 caps for Wigan, 65 for Kilmarnock, 69 for U.C.D (Ireland)

(29) Deeney 123 3 caps for Rams, 42 caps for Notts Co, 52 caps for Burton

(26) Legzdins 107; 4 Rams caps.46 caps for Burton, 40 caps for Haifax

(24) Bailey 104; 58 Rams caps, 46 caps for Crewe

(20) Hendrick 53 caps for Rams

(20) Jacobs 96; 5 caps for Rams, 87 caps for Northampton

(19) O'brien 23 Rams caps

Developement players, little first team experience at this level yet

(17) Hughes 10 Rams caps

(16) Bennett 10 ams caps

(22) <> Atkins 93, 1 Rams cap, 59 caps for Burton

(19) <>Ball 34, 29 caps for Rams, 5 caps for Cov

(21) Naylor 33, 8 caps for Rams, 23 caps for Mansfield

(20) Freeman 27; 19 caps for Notts County

(20) Doyle 21 Rams caps

(18) Hoganson

(19) Gjokaj 1 Rams cap

(18) <> K Richards 7 caps for Matlock

(19) <>Galinski 4 caps for Corby Town

(18) Adams

Highly rated Youth players close to the first team squad

(16) Thomas

(18) Lelan 1 Rams cap

(17) Dales

(17) Dawkins

Without the cash to buy more players already established at this level. Without the funding to keep others who were already established championship players supposedly on higher wages. Clough has had little option but to continously revamp the Rams squad each year. He has taken a gamble on a whole bunch of players who might make the grade. Some of these signings have not worked, some might still work. He is clearly trying to mold a squad that should improve with age. Some players will not make the grade, or fall out of favor.

Are you saying that we have spent less than any one else in the league, or that our team may come good at some time ?

I think Im missing the point you are trying to make ?
