  2. It took a lot of effort to get the club to move the away fans into the corner so the Derby fans could have the better seats. It would be daft to change it away from that.
  3. Meanwhile, the EFL tried to impose a Premier-league-mandated points deduction on Leicester. Leicester said, hold on, there's nothing in your rules that allows you to do this, and took out an injunction to stop it. The EFL said, "oh yes of course you're right" and withdrew the deduction. My conclusion is that the EFL doesn't know its own rules and if we'd had the wherewithal to be able to contest their outrageous behaviour against us, we'd have won as well. EFL statement: Leicester Statement:
  4. After yesterday's results: Bolton 1 Portsmouth 1 RAMS 3 Orient 0 Oxford 5 Peterborough 0 we now have Bolton play their game in hand on Tuesday at home to Shrewsbury, with Peterborough at home to Fleetwood the same night. You'd expect them both to win, but if Peterborough don't and if Bolton lose, a win for us on Saturday would secure promotion.
  5. I think this underestimates AI and how it will advance. Soon it will be able to bring up children here, so in decades/centuries it would be far more capable of doing this for a new space colony. If Human and machine minds work together, we'll be able to start spreading across the Galaxy (and beyond according to some work). [And, on one weird evening, a very friendly Anne Hathaway pulled me out of the audience in her one-woman New York Theatre play (she was playing a remote drone pilot in the USAF) and we had simulated sex before she went on to be pregnant and then had our baby! Very happy to oblige 😂😂 Maybe there'll always be a friendly Anne Hathaway to bring up children?]
  6. Fascinating stuff, isn't it? I'd say FTL (faster than light for those who don't know it) is probably scifi, but there's a chance. Failing that, there's time dilation from relativity, so you can make the journey by travelling *very* fast, even if thousands of years would pass on Earth. I guess your question about the ethics of sending embryos is related to the ethics of generational ships, but my thought is none of us choose the circumstances of our births. Coming back from America I rewatched Interstellar on the plane, which of course ends with Anne Hathaway's Dr Brant beginning the process of developing the embryos at the end. Which is a lovely twist, with Humans branching to form different civilizations across space. I'm also publishing a book on brain preservation at the moment and, while not discussed in the book, the author and I have talked separately about the applicability of it for long-duration spaceflight. It could well be an "ethical" method to seed the stars in the future.
  7. You don't want to pop the cork too early!
  8. Never understood us not signing Matt Derbyshire early in his career when he was obviously going to become a good player.
  9. Been in America for a few days, including a bit of work at the Carl Sagan Institute - even got to sit at the desk in his Cornell University office. They're searching for Earth-like worlds beyond the solar system, which we might one day travel to. The hardest step is this first one, becoming a multiplanetary species, building a self-sustaining civilization on Mars. Once we've done that it will have led to so many new technologies, especially around automation, life support and terraforming, that the next steps become far easier.
  10. Been away for ever and find no one has updated this thread. After today's win against Orient and the other results, we can't finish lower than 4th. Come on you Rams!
  11. No booking for failing to retreat from the freekick. This ref is clueless. I don't think he even booked Wildsmith for handling outside the area (if in fact he did - seemed to me the ref was guessing).
  12. Or you could say the sheer abject absurdity of religion. How crazy. When I was younger it looked as if we were heading into a new golden age of rationalism, but instead we're returning to medieval thinking. You're a professional athlete but because of an imaginary being you're not allowed to eat or drink while playing professional sport. Yeah, let's all applaud that. Could easily have been a red. What on earth was the ref playing at not booking him. And what a goal from Ward!!!!!!
  13. I think momentum is so important in football. Last time we crawled out of the third tier under Arthur, we won the league the next season and went straight into the top flight. Look at Ipswich this season, top of League One and full-on competing for promotion, while Wednesday and Argyle didn't maintain their momentum and may very well come back down. If we go up, and if the mindset is then just to survive for a year, we will likely be relegated.
  14. I do feel bad for Oduroh at Hartlepool who presumably isn't coming back. It felt such a coup when he signed, after skippering the Man City youth team IIRC. That said, I did wonder if Bates was gone for good too, but maybe this is to give him experience (18, same age as Brown)?
  15. Not strictly true. We would have 93 points, and so would Bolton if they win their remaining matches (with Portsmouth having more).
  16. Very disappointing (if predictable) results today with all three chasers winning. Lose at Portsmouth and automatic promotion is out of our hands. Sadly, with us scraping wins while Bolton bagged 5 each against Oxford and Reading, our goal difference can no longer be relied upon if the final points tally ends up being tied. What does that mean for this game? Obviously we all want to win, but I expect we will set up as a "must not lose" game and be quite cautious. So one of the strikers (NML/CBT/Wash) drops our for a midfielder (who will probably be Hourihane). I expect it will be CBT who makes way. Warne would take a draw now, and I think so would I. Then we remain masters of our destiny with just 4 games to go.
  17. What a lift that would give everyone, if he's on the bench. It does feel the calm before the storm, while we await tomorrow's results.
  18. All the very best to you and Leanne. And to your great nephews. Life's sometimes heartbreaking and difficult, and often complicated. But then also filled with joy. And I hope yours are filled with much joy in the future.
  19. How other social media companies compare with the new twitter is clearly relevant to many people on the thread. In this case, everyone else except Twitter is being sued for damaging children's mental health. Bizarre to suggest deleting it.
  20. What a massive Monday and Tuesday coming. How we feel going into this game will partly be determined by what happens the day before. Normally in League One I'd say only wins matter, but if Bolton don't win I'd be OK with a draw here. The extra day works in our favour in terms of recovery time, which makes me think Warne will pick an unchanged team for this one. Which would be: Wildsmith Wilson Nelson Cashin Sibley Ward Adams Smith Blackett-Taylor Mendez-Laing Washington Bench: Loach Robinson Hourihane Thompson Fornah Collins Waghorn I hate seeing Sibbo so far back, but at least when you look at Saturday's positions on WhoScored, the "back four" was actually more like Nelson, Cashin, Adams and Smith, with Wilson and Sibley much further forward. This selection means not rushing Collins back into the starting lineup - we need to be careful with him. On a side note, what an amazing few days it's been for young defender Keilen Robinson, playing for England U19s and then making the first team bench. Congrats to him!
  21. This is Derby we're talking about - I still wouldn't feel safe. Has to be 4 points clear for that.
  22. I presume he'd just taken an inswinging corner. On the radio in the bit I was able to listen to, they were saying Sibbo's corners were very good (as I think they always are).
  23. Looking at Twitter vids, a couple of shocking first half offside calls given against us when players were clean through. Yards onside.
  24. Fantastic result. Called away so missed the commentary, but so relieved when I checked the final score. Probably lucky not to have to go through the in-game tension with the rest of you. Well done to the lads. We don't have one foot in the Championship, but I'd say maybe a big toe. Lets hope it can cling on. I fully expect the three teams in the hunt below us to win on Monday. Might even put an accumulator insurance bet on it...
  25. Booked on 20 minutes. Scored this goal: Apparently through one-on-one for a second but a blatantly wrong offside call. Subbed on 72 minutes.
