Whittingham to Forest Fairytale

Nottingham Forest have failed with a £1million bid to sign Peter Whittingham from Championship rivals Cardiff City.

Whittingham has been heavily linked with a summer move to the City Ground after scoring 25 goals for Cardiff last season.

The midfielder, who joined the Bluebirds from Aston Villa in 2007, has only 12 months left on his current contract and that has led to doubts over his future.

However, after confirming an offer from Forest has been turned down, Cardiff chief executive Gethin Jenkins revealed the club are in talks over a new deal for Whittingham.

"We rejected the bid from Nottingham Forest as we want to keep hold of Whittingham," said Jenkins in the South Wales Echo.

"We are continuing negotiations with Peter over a new contract here at Cardiff City."

The rejection of the offer means further frustration in the transfer market for Forest boss Billy Davies, who has been struggling to add to his squad since the end of last season.

Nottingham Forest have held talks with Cardiff winger Peter Whittingham over a £1.8million deal.

Middlesbrough have also shown interest in the 25-year-old but Forest look to have the upper hand.

Boro have signed Matthew Kilgallon on a season-long loan from Sunderland after Lee Naylor opted to join Cardiff. Kilgallon is still short of fitness after a back injury.
