How much are Derby players worth?

As has been mentioned, the valuation of a player could differ greatly between his parent club and what another club is willing to pay. If we're going on quality, nobody is worth more than £8m and I include Hughes in that. If he was French, there wouldn't be talk of an eight-figure fee that's for sure.

But the English market and desperation from some clubs see players go for silly amounts.

Considering we spent over £30m in fees on Butterfield, Johnson, Anya, Vydra, Camara, Weimann and Blackman combined is mindboggling. We wouldn't get half of that back now.

Don't particularly dispute this number. But if we're buying players who are "fully developed " in mid to late 20''s, then we shouldn't expect anything else than the accounting rules which is that they depreciate to 0 over 4 years.

So if we sold weimann Johnson and Butterfield in the summer for half what we paid we'd be about on track.

I guess what you're articulating though is that with the wholly unsustainable increases across the market we should now be aiming for higher than that - any shortfall against this inflated number being lost value in some sense.

Sounds very dangerous to me if clubs are basing any estimate of current player value on being able to achieve some future inflation. A bit like buying a car on one of those deferred final payment deals and hoping that by the time the final payment is due it will have become a classic.

No e have exactly performed great this season. Ince will be the only one that will command a decent fee and maybe get plenty of interest. One of the clubs coming down may take a punt on him as he's proven at this level or maybe a lower premier club. Other than that most would have depreciated in value and we'll struggle to get the big earners off the books so we'll have to sell them on the cheap even if there is any interest.

It's the earnings that will be the inhibitor to moving players on imo rather than any cataclysmic loss of value.

Take blackman for example - he's been here just over a year and we've already sunk 1 year of his fee so he's in dcfc books at what, 2.25m and falling. Even if he'd lost 50% of that value wouldn't be the end of the world.

BUT - if he's really on say 30k per week for a 4 year deal and no one's prepared to match that,  then we're stuck unless we agree to pay his contract up. Potentially a further 4m plus.

Not itk btw so all figures and abbreviations for illustration purposes only
