It could be argued that players of that quality are actually easier to handle. Brian didn't need to tell Colin Todd and David Nish how to play football. Brian didn't need to tell Colin Todd and David Nish how to play football. You get big-time Charlies and good proffesionals at any level. Success comes from building a side with players who respect and play for their manager or coach. Clough knew the players that could do that for him at Derby, and many of them were very, very talented and established players, others were rather ordinary players who he turned into bloody good ones. He didn't do that at Leeds... The point is, no matter the level, a good leader finds the type of characters he knows he can handle. Revie and Clough were very different managers and it's no surprise to me that when one took over the other's side, it went very wrong. Bad managers don't have that sixth sense for spotting players they can work with who they don't really know yet. It's something I worry about with our current manager. In the post war years our record v birmingham away is dire.... We played them away only two times in the 50s....we lost 3-0 and drew 1-1 In the 60s we only played them away twice before Brian clough arrived.....we drew 5-5 and lost 2-0. So how did the wonderful teams of the clough and mackay era do? Brian clough.... 1968 lost 3-1 1969 drew 1-1 Feb 1973 lost 2-0, sept 73 drew 0-0. We never won at birmingham under brian clough. As for mackay.... 1974 lost 3-2 1975 lost 2-1 1976 lost 5-1 Oh dear......... And so on..... 1977 lost 3-1 1978 drew 1-1 1982 lost 3-1 1983 lost 4-0 1986 drew 1-1 1993 drew 1-1 And then game the 1995 game with igor....won 4-1! So the 1995 game with igor was the only ever win in 18 attempts.... Did we turn a corner? Here is the record since that game..... 2007 lost 1-0 2008 drew 1-1 2009 lost 1-0 2012 drew 2-2 And yesterday.....lost 3-1 Out of 22 post-war away matches before yesterday the record is 1 win, 9 draws, 12 defeats. I was just working on a statistical analysis of our performances at all grounds within a 50 mile radius, in months when the temperature did not exceed 5 degrees C, and when the average age of the team was less than 25. IMHO. It probably does. You've probably spotted that my statement regarding post-war results is wrong because i failed to include the 1948 away win.
