trekkie_ram
Have you tried a pair of binoculars? 10x 50 and a Sky Atlas is a great way to start. Load to see with bins, learn the constellations, and you don't have to rush into buying a scope. Any recommendations? She poo-poo'd the idea of a £130 telescope. I doubt she'd let me have more than £50 (if that). I reckon she'll get you one for Xmas.. 'http://www.dcfcfans.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> I doubt it, she knows she'd buy the wrong thing and I'll moan more about that than appreciate the thought of the gift. trekkie_ram
For the record, I was fending off two kids from my chicken chow-mein when I wrote that last post. Obviously 10x50 is the recommendation - lol.
Butthead
Have a read of this [url=http://binocularsky.com/binoc_choosing.php#5]http://binocularsky...._choosing.php#5 10x50 are the most popular for handheld and plenty around at a good price, just buy from a genuine astro retailer so you know they will be properly collimated or no fuss return. This is the best sky atlas you can buy and will be invaluable in getting the most out of your bins [url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sky-Telescopes-Pocket-Atlas/dp/1931559317/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354214585&sr=8-1]http://www.amazon.co...54214585&sr=8-1 Bins are actually better than scopes for viewing certain objects such as open clusters, our nearest galaxy Andromeda, and even the Orion Nebula can be seen with bins. Choosing the right scope can be a minefield, and the cheap end scopes have the habit of putting folk off astronomy for life!
Boycie
It was Jupiter by the moon, December is a good month to observe as it's getting high up in the night sky. If anybody has a pair of reasonable binoculars try spotting it's moons too. The coloured rings around the moon are as Albert said, nice to see but does mean the upper atmosphere is too unsteady for anything else. The fullish moon is a bit of a pain in the a#se as it washes out other sights such as galaxies and nebula. When it's like this it's only worth viewing the moon itself, planets and double stars. There's going to be a comet in the New Year too..... is this the one that will return in 30 odd years and possibly impact with us if it passes too close in the new year? I watch the doc channel dustsee.

I watch the doc channel dustsee. Was that a comet? I know there's an asteroid that's meant to pass inbetween us and the moon but did'nt know of any comets that are going to be close enough to be considered a threat.
