  1. Divergent

First of the post-Hunger Games teen thriller franchise based in a future Chicago, where each of the population is segregated into one of 5 "factions", based on their personality traits. This then governs who you mix & live with as well as your job and role in society. One girl doesn't fit into any faction (she is "Divergent"), which causes her no end of kerfuffle and palava.

Enjoyable as long as you can swallow the premise that such a contrived division of the people could ever exist in the first place. The second one is out in the cinema at the moment (Insurgent) and I'll probably watch that one when it's out on Prime, so this one couldn't have been that bad that I still want to see what happens next.

    6.5/10

  2. Before I go to sleep

Nicole Kidman is an amnesiac, forgets her life every night she goes to sleep and wakes up with no memory of her husband and the last 14 years. Colin Firth & Mark Strong also, who may or may not be telling her the truth.

Enjoyed this. Read the book a few years ago on holiday. Surprisingly short film at about 1hr 20 but some good twists along the way.

    8/10

  3. Providing more bins = having to pay for them and someone to empty them regularly. I just don't think the councils have the money any more & this is low priority. Hell, it takes them long enough to repair pot holes which can be a genuine risk to life.

It's a slippery slope, though. Once an area is littered, then there's less incentive for people to try and keep it looking clean & tidy, so they make it worse.

What we need is for somebody to come along and promote a "big society" idea, where everyone does their bit to improve the well-being of everyone. It can't fail.....

  4. 22 Jump Street

I remembered enjoying 21 Jump Street but couldn't remember a thing about it and this one is much the same. Good but instantly forgettable.

I like the constant knowing references to the storyline here being exactly the same as it was first time and that "the second time is never as good as the first". Some good jokes & particularly liked the comical chase scene past the "Benjamin Hill Centre for film Studies" building. Some good end credits comedy as well.

8/10. Tongue firmly in cheek & good fun.
