Along with McNish I considered him to be the best British driver outside F1.

Terrible to lose a talent and even worse for someone to die so young doing what they love.

Autosport reporting a roll-hoop failure. It certainly took a lot in the impact. The TV director recognised it was a biggie straight away, no replays or anything.

Thoughts for the family.

F1 cars don't reach those sort of speeds often, and when they do, there's a much larger margin for error with greater run offs. In most IndyCar tracks you hit a concrete wall at over 200mph if you get it wrong, so there's always more carnage.

On top of that, the FIA has been very careful with safety since 1994 and they've made it pretty difficult for anyone to get killed in a Formula 1 car. American racing has always been more free-spirited and they've been extremely lucky with avoiding fatalities in races. But losing such a high-profile driver like that will probably change stateside racing as much as Senna's accident did.

This is what am trying to say, in this day and age with F1 saftey, surley the indy cars should of a least matched it

I agree, sorry was just explaining why it's not so safe. F1 cars wouldn't be a great deal safer in the same conditions anyway.

Heard him described somewhere as "the most famous British sports superstar most Britons had never heard of".
