Clough puts players first

Nigel Clough wants to resolve the futures of his players before getting round to discussing a new deal as Derby County manager.

Derby have risen to fourth in the Championship on the back of six wins in eight games and reports suggest Clough is in line for a new contract.

However, before committing himself to a long-term future at Pride Park, Clough is keen to ensure several members of his squad and backroom team are looked after.

"I wouldn't contemplate a new contract before all members of my support staff have signed theirs," said Clough.

"But before that we have got several player negotiations to sort out.

"I don't know anything about my own situation. When we were in the bottom three six weeks ago I was supposed to be out the door!"

Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Robbie Savage does not believe Clough has received enough credit for the job he has done at Derby.

Savage said: "The gaffer puts other people first. This is someone who can go to the top. I've worked with a number of managers and Nigel is up there with the best.

"I don't think people realise the job Nigel has done here. There was a big mess that needed clearing up and he's done that.

"He kept us up in the first season and in the second we had our third highest finish in 10 years. And this year we're thinking about the play-offs."

Old news? he bit about Savage stating what a mess Nigel had had to sort out was in the Telegraph today so, that bit can surely not be that old.

I think it is interesting what Savage has said about Nigel, it is clear he rates him and considering he played under O'Neill in what was (and I hate to say it) a damn good side I would say it is praise indeed.

Yeah.

Sav also played under Mark Hughes in a Wales side that looked to be making fast progress until Hughes went and it all promptly went down hill. To say Nigel is up there among them with O'Neil says plenty about Nige's character surely?

A quick question, one that I am struggling answering for myself.

Why is the press talking to Clough about him getting a new deal 20 months befoer his current deal expires?

Is it because Nigel is asking for a new one?

or could it be they are looking for a story from anywhere, and with us being the in form team in the championship they are looking at us for it.
